Inaugural Solaris University Challenge Winners AnnouncedStudents Demonstrate Creativity with the Solaris Operating System SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. Worldwide Education and Research Conference, February 6, 2007 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW), the creator of Solaris, today announced winners of the first Solaris University Challenge, a contest serving as a showcase for the innovation and talent of students worldwide who create projects with the free and open source Solaris Operating System (OS). A panel of experts judged submissions on usability, quality, innovation, effective use of technology, and benefits to Solaris OS users and the OpenSolaris OS community.
This year's winner is Sergej Alekseev, of Oldenburg University in Germany. Sergej and his professor, Günther Stiege, created the JDLabAgent, a debugging agent for Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which extended the debugging functions built into Solaris Dtrace technology, demonstrating Java observability on large-scale projects. The program was tested using Solaris and Solaris™ Cluster running on Sun Fire™ x64 servers, and was successfully applied in several joint research projects with private industry. The well-documented and tested application was highly-integrated and easy to manage, utilizing a particularly well-developed GUI. Sergej's project was selected out of over 330 entries from 15 countries worldwide for the grand prize - a Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation plus US$5000. Oldenburg University will receive a credit with the retail value of US$100,000 good toward the purchase of Sun Microsystems products including Sun Fire x64 servers and UltraSPARC processor-based systems, to help the campus expand its technology capabilities. Honorable mentions for the Solaris University Challenge include:
More than 100 schools have adopted Solaris IT education into their curriculum, and Solaris OS curricula has been developed and posted in opensolaris.org for any teacher to use. "We received many exciting entries from a great number of OpenSolaris developers from around the world, illustrating our belief that innovation happens everywhere," noted Tom Goguen, vice president of Solaris Marketing for Sun Microsystems. "We are proud to be able to play a role in their education by sharing our technology and stimulating the creativity of the next generation of developers." Sun has invested over $500 million in research and development for the Solaris OS, and has delivered over 7 million licenses since its release in January 2005. One of the major strategic advantages that Solaris offers Sun customers is that it is available for free and is open source. The Solaris 10 OS is offered on SPARC-based systems, plus more than 700 x64/x86-based systems from top manufacturers including Sun, Dell, HP, and IBM. With the Solaris 10 OS, customers get a free and open source, indemnified and commercially-supported platform, while gaining access to a vibrant community of some of the world's best developers to drive ongoing innovation.
