Sun Extends Software Compiler and Tool Technologies to Multi-Core Processors and Multithreaded Applications

Sun Studio 12 Software Accelerates Application Runtimes and Simplifies Development for Solaris and GNU/Linux Platforms

SANTA CLARA, Calif. June 4, 2007 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW), today announced compiler and tools technologies for both Solaris and GNU/Linux platforms, allowing developers to take full advantage of the recent advances in multi-core and multithreading applications.

"Sun Studio 12 software combined with the Solaris OS allows developers to maximize their application performance, with the guarantee of source and binary compatibility provided by the Solaris Application Guarantee Program," said Jeet Kaul, vice president, Developer Products and Programs, Sun. "For the first time Sun Studio 12 software offers a complete development environment and record-setting compilers for the Linux platform."

Sun Studio 12 software, which includes a NetBeans-based integrated development environment (IDE), simplifies the development of applications on the newest multi-core SPARC and x86/64 processor-based systems. In addition, Sun Studio 12 provides C, C++ and Fortran compilers and an advanced suite of static and dynamic tools for memory debugging, application profiling and multi-core optimizations, as well as libraries targeting the high performance market. Sun is collaborating closely with both Intel and AMD to ensure that Sun Studio compilers and libraries take full advantage of the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, code-named "Barcelona" and the Intel Xeon processor 5300 series.

"During our evaluation of Sun Studio 12 software, the ease of transporting our code from Linux to Solaris and back provided an unprecedented ease-of-porting experience," said open source FreeSWITCH software developer, Michal Bielicki. "Not only was it easy to maintain the code repository and coordinate teams, the resulting binaries on both platforms where also of the highest quality and optimized for maximum performance."

Sun offers a tiered set of support services for Sun Studio 12 software, ranging from single incident to comprehensive developer plans. In addition, with a broad portfolio of training and certification offerings, developers can enhance their skillsets to take advantage of cutting-edge technologies.
