Rahul N. Merchant Elected to Sun Microsystems Board of Directors

Mr. Merchant Brings More Than 25 Years of Successful Technology Leadership and Operational Management Experience

SANTA CLARA, CA February 2, 2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced that Rahul N. Merchant has been elected to the Company's Board of Directors. Mr. Merchant is an accomplished financial services industry leader with a proven track record for managing large technology operations and organizations across the globe.

Most recently Mr. Merchant served as executive vice president, chief information officer and member of the executive committee at Fannie Mae. Prior to this, Mr. Merchant served as the chief technology officer at Merrill Lynch. He has managed some of the world's largest technology budgets and has a deep first-hand knowledge of Sun's products and innovation roadmap. His previous experience also includes senior leadership roles at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson and Sanwa Financial Products. Mr. Merchant currently serves on the Boards of Collebara, Inc. and Netuitive and on the Board of Advisors of the American India Foundation.

Mr. Merchant was nominated to join Sun's Board as part of the previously announced agreement with Southeastern Asset Management, Inc. to add two new independent members to Sun's Board of Directors.

Mr. Merchant holds a bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering from Bombay University, a master in science degree in Computer Science from the University of Memphis and a master in business administration, Finance from Temple University.
