The digital divide refers to the gap that exists between those people who have access to digital technologies and information and those who don't. And at Sun, we're working hard to eliminate this barrier.
Share the Opportunity is Sun's global giving initiative designed to eliminate the digital divide and increase network participation. It focuses on Sun’s worldwide philanthropic efforts to increase network accessibility and provide opportunities for global participation, economic growth, and social progress. Through Share the Opportunity, we've joined forces with others to enable better education, to expand opportunities, and to make those opportunities available to anyone, anywhere, regardless of culture, nationality, or economic means.
Share the Opportunity is the cornerstone of the Sun Microsystems Foundation, a separate nonprofit charitable organization supported by contributions from Sun. Established in 1990, the Sun Foundation has donated more than $43M in technology and services and matching employee grants to schools and nonprofit, charitable organizations that seek to increase participation of under-represented populations.
