Corporate Responsibility

Workplace

At Sun, eco responsibility is embedded into every aspect of our operations, including where our employees work and how they commute. We also lead a range of resource conservation, waste reduction, and recycling programs, and we strive to bring our philosophy of openness and transparency to these efforts by reporting on our environmental impact.

Embracing an Open Work Concept

The Sun Open Work program combines innovative technologies, tools, and support processes that enable Sun employees to work effectively anywhere, anytime, using any device. This type of work environment reduces the importance of the traditional assigned office and instead provides flexible workspaces that are widely distributed, conveniently located, and shared by many, as well as the option to work from home.

Through this program, more than 19,000 employees around the world work from home or in a flexible office up to two days a week. This represents close to 56 percent of Sun's employee population.

Open Work connects the workforce with the people and information they need — regardless of location. Employees can achieve a better work/life balance because of the tools and technologies that enable them to perform in a globally distributed environment.

Work How, When, and Where You Feel Most Productive, Creative, Effective

A recent study conducted by Sun showed that:

  • Employees believe that the Open Work platform provides them with the tools and technologies to support their work environment and to help them feel more productive. More than 75% of employees think the Open Work program provides the flexibility and support they need to accomplish work objectives.
  • Our flexible and innovative work environment and our ability to attract and retain top talent are two of the top reasons 82% of employees said they would recommend Sun.

Additional employee benefits (Open Work Energy Study, Sun Microsystems, April 2008):

  • Commute time saved: 104 hr/yr (like 2.5 weeks vacation)
  • 3,700 miles of commute avoided, saving $906 in car wear and tear ($.24/mile)
  • Employee gasoline expense saved: $870/yr (and climbing!)
