In this presentation, users will be introduced to the Linux and OpenSolaris operating systems, the OpenOffice.org office suite, and Orca: free solutions with the potential to bridge the digital divide by minimizing the cost of ownership.

Obtaining and Installing Ubuntu Linux Using the Orca Screen Reader

Ubuntu Linux has an accessible Live CD that enables users who are blind to try, and optionally install, Orca and Linux. In this demonstration, participants will learn how to use this CD, as well as how to configure Orca in Ubuntu and OpenSolaris.

The Sun Java Desktop System: Basic UNIX Accessibility

A tour of the accessibility features of the Sun Java Desktop System, a UNIX desktop based on open source GNOME, and shipping with Sun Solaris 10 and soon with Sun Linux. We will demonstrate keyboard navigation, themeing support, the AccessX suite of keyboard enhancements, the Gnopernicus screen reader/magnifier, and the GOK on-screen keyboard. We will also demonstrate accessibility at the initial login screen.

Accessible UNIX Productivity Applications

An accessible desktop is only as interesting - and useful - as the accessible applications you can use with it. We will demonstrate the growing collection of accessible UNIX productivity applications, including the StarOffice office suite, the Mozilla web browser, the Evolution e-mail and calendar application, and Adobe Reader for viewing PDF files. All of these will be shown with the screen reader, magnifier, and on-screen keyboard.
