Deploying Oracle ASM Using iSCSI on Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System

Introduction

This quick start guide describes configuring Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System volumes for export as iSCSI targets, then configuring those iSCSI logical unit numbers (LUNs) at the database server to be used for Oracle ASM.

The iSCSI protocol allows a client system (initiator) to send SCSI commands to targets on a remote server over an existing IP network infrastructure, thus providing a low-cost alternative to a SAN infrastructure. The Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System (2008.Q4 in this document) supports the iSCSI, NFS, CIFS, FTP, and HTTP protocols and provides a comprehensive set of data services that can provide unlimited snapshots, a cloning feature, rollback, and remote replication. ASM is a feature in Oracle Database 10g and 11g that can offer simpler data management and a vertically integrated file system and volume manager built specifically for Oracle databases.
