Sun Desktop Manager 1.0, a component of the Sun Ray Software 4 product, provides capabilities to manage desktops in a thin client environment. This document offers instructions for setting up the software and examples of its usage, as well as extensive screen captures.
Here are the main features of Sun Desktop Manager:
Desktop control: Enables system administrator to deliver a securely configured open source desktop environment to Sun Ray clients. Centralized privilege and policy control enable the enterprise to control user access and applications based on each user's identity.
Central application management: The Sun Java Desktop System on the Solaris Operating System comprises several open source components (GNOME, Mozilla, and StarOffice software). With the Desktop Manager, system administrators can configure over 900 different preferences within these applications. Admins can centrally customize the Launch menu or desktop icons, change proxy settings for Mozilla, restrict Internet surfing for certain employees or departments, or change defaults for StarOffice software.
Ability to leverage existing directory infrastructure: Sun Ray Software's Desktop Manager is a highly flexible tool that can connect to LDAP or Active Directory data repositories, without any changes to the corporate directory schema. For small deployments or testing, a flat file repository can be used.
