Many ways are available to model a repository for storing Sun Desktop Manager configurations. Many types of directories also can be used, such as LDAP, Active Directory, or flat files. This article describes how to set up a simple Sun Desktop Manager configuration based on the Sun Java Enterprise System Directory Server, version 5.2. Extensive screen captures illustrate the process.

This tutorial configures the directory solely through GUI-based tools: The Directory Server start console is used to add entries to the directory, and the Sun Desktop Manager web console then adds the desktop configurations. This method of building the directory is chosen to illustrate the various steps involved. For real-world large-scale deployments, creating LDAP Data Interchange Format (LDIF) files and loading those is, of course, the more efficient way of building the directory repository.
