The Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) identifies hardware (servers, desktop and laptop systems and a selection of peripheral devices) that is compatible with OpenSolaris and the Solaris Operating System (the Solaris OS). The HCL also provides information about available software support. See the HCL Overview.

Compatibility Quick Checks
Find out quickly whether the Solaris OS can run on your x86 system.
If you do not find your hardware listed on this HCL, you can use one of the
following tools to quickly estimate whether the Solaris OS is likely to work
well with your hardware.
Sun Device Detection Tool tells you whether the Solaris OS supports the devices
that are detected in your x86 system. Sun Device Detection Tool runs on most
popular x86 systems by simply clicking a link - you do not need to install
anything. Solaris Operating System for x86 Installation Check Tool runs on any
x86 system after you burn a CD and boot from it.
Can the OpenSolaris 2009.06 OS run on my x86 system?
The OpenSolaris 2009.06 OS liveCD includes the Device Driver Utility (DDU), which is based on the popular Sun Device Detection Tool. To run the DDU, click on the appropriate icon after launching the liveCD.
Hardware Certification
Sun provides a free download of the Hardware Certification Test Suite (HCTS) application to enable Sun Partners and customers to certify their systems and components with the Solaris OS on x86 and SPARC platforms. The systems and components that are certified using the HCTS can be included in the HCL as Certified. The systems and components that are tested by the end user without going through the Solaris Hardware Certification program by using HCTS can also be included in HCL as "Reported to Work".
