Getting Started With Sun Connection - Update Manager

1. Install the Sun Connection Update Manager client software on each system that you will be managing, as described below.
2. Register each system, as described below.

To install the Update Manager software

Get details about system requirements, supported operating systems, and the steps to plan for and install Sun Connection Update Manager here.

Download and install the Update Manager client software by using the installer, the patchadd command, or the smpatch command:

• Using the Installer - Download the Sun Update Manager client software and run the included installer.
• Using the patchadd command - Download the latest version of the Sun Connection client patch from SunSolve 1121118 (SPARC) or 121119 (x86). Use the patchadd command to install the patch. Refer to the patchadd man pages for patchadd details.
• Using the smpatch command - Use the Solaris 10 smpatch command to download the client software patch from Sun's patch server and install it. Select either patch 1121118 (SPARC) or 121119 (x86). Refer to the smpatch man pages for smpatch details.

To register your system with Sun Connection

After you've installed Update Manager, register your system with Sun Connection by using one of the following methods:

• Sun Update Manager application, as described here
• CLI (sconadm), as described here.

Requirements

1. Sun Online Account. If you do not have a Sun Online Account, you can sign up for an account during registration.
2. (Optional) Sun Service Contract Number. If you have a valid Sun Service Contract Number (also known as a Subscription Key or Contract ID), enter it during the registration process. Without one, Sun Connection will operate at a lower level of service. You can always update your subscription information at a later date by using Sun Connection Update Manager or the sconadm CLI.
