Install Time Update Issues and Workarounds for Solaris 10 OS on x64
Systems
October 2007
This document lists workarounds for problems that users may
encounter when using the
Install Time Update (ITU) or Driver Update (DU) for the Solaris 10 OS on x64
machines.
Note - Many of these issues and workarounds are
applicable to some or all of
the update releases of Solaris 10. Some of these issues might have been
fixed in Solaris Express Developer Edition release.
Issues and Workarounds
The Solaris installation should support ITUs from USB floppy
disks.
Workaround This issue has been resolved in Solaris
Express Developer Edition release. For Solaris 10, users should use a
CD or DVD disc instead of USB floppy disks as the ITU installation
media.

During Solaris Interactive (Java GUI) installation, if a user
selects the Networked option (after installing driver updates),
configures a valid IP address, netmask, and hostname successfully and
clicks the Confirm button, the following error message is displayed:
An error has occurred in configuring the
system. Please go back and check your settings
The system console also displays messages such as Unable to run cmd: /usr/sbin/sysidput and the
installation is aborted.
Workaround Any of the following workarounds can be
applied to resolve this issue.
Use DHCP to configure the network parameters instead of
manually configuring the IP address, netmask, and hostname.
You might receive an error related to the sysidput command and see a message such as the
following:
An error has occurred in configuring
the system. Please go back and check your settings
In this case, click OK in the dialog box , open a
terminal window and kill in.routed manually
by typing the following command:
pkill in.routed
Then click the Confirm button in the Confirm Information
window again.
Select the Non-Networked option to complete the
installation successfully. Subsequently, reconfigure the network
manually from the shell by using the ifconfig
command.

After applying ITU updates using the Apply Driver Updates ITU
menu option, the user cannot go back to the previous menu and choose
the installation type, for example: Solaris Interactive (console
session). Instead, the Solaris Interactive (default) menu option is
automatically selected.
Workaround Once ITU is installed, press Control-C
instead of C to return to the Solaris Installation menu.

Users should be able to add ITUs from USB flash drives.
Workaround Use a CD/DVD disc for ITU installation
instead of a USB flash drive.

When adding ITU updates with the CD/DVD(c) option, the floppy
drive is read first.
Workaround The order of device access does not
prevent the user from completing the ITU installation. The ITU
installation completes successfully for the CD/DVD(c) selection.

Inconsistency between the Apply Driver Updates menu option
and subsequent menu options in the ITU_Jumpstart menu.
Workaround This issue has been fixed in Solaris
Express Developer Edition. After selecting the Apply Driver Updates
option from the ITU_Jumpstart menu, the user need not press Return.
However, users must press the Return key for subsequent menu options.

After selecting the Driver Update menu option, no
confirmation message is displayed to indicate whether the update was
accepted.
Workaround This issue has been fixed in Solaris
Express Developer Edition. In the Solaris 10 8/07 release, messages
indicating successful completion of driver updates might not be
displayed. However, the user should proceed with the installation
process. Users should follow the system prompts to reinsert the
installation CD/DVD, press Return, and continue with the Solaris 10
installation.

During a network installation of the Solaris OS, after
applying a CD Driver Update, the user is asked to reinsert the Solaris
CD.
Workaround After applying the Driver Update, do not
select the End menu option. Instead, press Control-C to display the
ITU_Jumpstart menu. Then choose the option for Network based install.

The GUI ITU installation process requires the user to type
Yes in response to pkgadd prompts during
the installation. Although the installation completes successfully, the
Yes prompt seems to freeze or spin.
Workaround Use the command-line installation.

The software does not ask for or verify whether the correct
install CD/DVD has been reinserted after adding ITUs.
Workaround The user should check that the correct
CD/DVD is inserted after ITU installation.

Solaris fails to unmount CD/DVD media ITUs. User cannot add
the ITU image from a second CD.
Workaround After installing the image from the first
ITU CD/DVD, open a new terminal window and manually unmount the CD/DVD.
This issue has been resolved in Solaris Express Developer Edition
release. Users should use the latest Solaris Express Developer Edition
release.
