Upgrading Sun Management Center 3.6.x to Version 4.0

Rahimunnisa M. with Deepa Nag and Amol Chiplunkar, October 2007

This article explains the Sun Management Center database migration process.

This article contains the following topics:

Migrating Your Sun MC 3.6.x Database Information

You need to upgrade your existing Sun Management Center (Sun MC) database when you upgrade from Sun MC 3.6.x to Sun MC 4.0. The Sun MC 4.0 installer migrates the existing database. During the uninstallation of 3.6.x, you can choose to preserve the data. Subsequently, while installing Sun MC 4.0, you can migrate the preserved data.

Note - Sun Management Center 4.0 can only run on the Solaris 10 OS release.

Database Migration Patches

To migrate the database, you have to apply the database migration patch. Different patch IDs are applicable for different versions of the Solaris Operating System. Choose the patch based on the Solaris version of your Sun MC installation. The patch IDs are as follows:

  • Solaris 10 SPARC: 123923-04

  • Solaris 9 SPARC: 123921-04

  • Solaris 8 SPARC: 123920-04

To Apply the Database Migration Patch
  1. Log in as root on the machine where the Sun MC 3.6.x server is installed.
  2. Apply the 3.6.x database migration patch.
    1. Download the patch from http://www.sunsolve.sun.com.
    2. Untar and then unzip the downloaded patch file.
    3. Install the patch using the patchadd command.

      On Solaris 10:

      patchadd -G 123923-04

Note - The -G option adds the patch to packages in the current zone.

      On Solaris 9:

      patchadd 123921-04

      On Solaris 8:

      patchadd 123920-04

Upgrading Your Sun MC 3.6.x Installation

This section describes how to migrate your existing database information and upgrade from Sun MC 3.6.x through either the command line or the GUI.

Note - To improve the performance of the Performance Reporting Manager (PRM) add-on with Sun MC 3.6.x, you can modify the PRM settings before uninstalling Sun MC 3.6.x. For more details on modifying the PRM settings, see Migrating the PRM Data.

Upgrading Sun MC 3.6.x Through the Command Line

If you are running Sun MC 3.6.x on Solaris 8, Solaris 9, Solaris 10 6/06, or Solaris 10 1/06, you must uninstall that version from your system, upgrade to the Solaris 10 11/06 release, and then install Sun MC 4.0.

Note - For the complete uninstallation, installation, and setup procedure, see Sun Management Center 4.0 Installation and Configuration Guide.

The following steps assume that you have installed Sun MC in the default directory /opt. If you have installed Sun MC in a different directory, replace /opt with the name of the directory you specified.

  • Log in as root on the machine where the Sun MC 3.6.x server is installed.

  • (Optional) If Sun MC 3.6.x is installed on the Solaris 8, Solaris 9, Solaris 10 6/06, or Solaris 10 1/06 Operating System, uninstall Sun MC 3.6.x.

    • Go to the /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin directory.

    • Type ./es-uninst.

    • Select the Sun MC products that you want to uninstall.

    • Type y when the uninstaller asks whether you want to preserve the data.

If you choose to preserve the data, the uninstaller exports the data and stores it in a text format in the /var/opt/SUNWsymon/upgrade/pg_data directory.

Note - The uninstaller also saves the data in the Sun MC 3.6.x format in the /var/opt/SUNWsymon/upgrade/db directory.

  • On a system running the Solaris 10 11/06 OS, install Sun MC 4.0.

    • Go to the /image-dir/disk1/sbin directory.

    • Type ./es-inst.

    • Type y when the installer asks whether you want to uninstall a previous version of Sun MC.

The installer uninstalls 3.6.x, and installs version 4.0.

  • Type ./es-setup to run the Sun MC 4.0 setup process.

Note - During the setup process, be sure to provide the same security key and SNMPv1 community security string that you specified for the 3.6.x version.

  • Type y when the installer asks whether you want to import previous data.

If you choose to import the data, the installer imports data from the /var/opt/SUNWsymon/upgrade/pg_data directory and inserts it into the Sun MC 4.0 database.

  • Once the setup process is complete, change to the /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin directory and start Sun MC 4.0 by typing ./es-start.

Upgrading Sun MC 3.6.x Through the GUI

If you are running Sun MC 3.6.x on Solaris 8, Solaris 9, Solaris 10 6/06, or Solaris 10 1/06, you must uninstall that version from your system, upgrade to the Solaris 10 11/06 release, and then install Sun MC 4.0. If you are running Sun MC 3.6.x on a Solaris 10 system, the Sun MC 4.0 installation procedure includes the uninstallation process.

    • Type ./es-guiuninst.

The Sun Management Center Uninstallation Wizard is launched.

    • Select the Sun MC products that you want to uninstall.

    • Select the Save Data check box in the Save Configuration Data screen and click Next to continue with the uninstallation steps.

    Figure 1: Save Configuration Data

  • On a server running the Solaris 10 11/06 OS, install Sun MC 4.0.

    • Go to the /image-dir/disk1/sbin directory.

    • Type ./es-guiinst.

The Previous Version of Sun Management Center Detected screen is displayed.

Note - During the setup process, be sure to provide the same security key and SNMPv1 community security string that you specified for the 3.6.x version.

  • Once the setup process is complete, change to the /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin directory and start Sun MC 4.0 by typing ./es-guistartup.

Migrating the PRM Data

If you are using the Performance Reporting Manager (PRM) add-on with Sun MC 3.6.x, you can modify the PRM settings to improve performance. For a small or medium PRM installation, change the value of the DATA_LIMIT parameter before you uninstall Sun MC 3.6.x. For more information about PRM, see Sun Management Center 3.6.1 Performance Reporting Manager User’s Guide.

To Change the PRM Settings

  1. Go to the /opt/SUNWsymon/lib/sbin directory.
  2. Edit the sunmc_ora2pg.conf configuration file.

The sunmc_ora2pg.conf file contains parameters that are required to export the data.

  3. Change the value of the DATA_LIMIT parameter.

By default, this parameter is set to suit large PRM installations and the value is 6600000.

    • For a small PRM installation, change the value to 800000
    • For a medium PRM installation, change the value to 4000000

Database Migration Logs

While migrating the database, Sun MC 4.0 generates various log files for the core and add-on data. These log files contain informational and error entries.

The database export logs are located in /var/opt/SUNWsymon/exportlogs. These files are as follows:

coredb_data.log, coredb_seq.log

Sun MC core data and sequence

prm_data.log, prm_seq.log

PRM data and sequence

scm_data.log, scm_seq.log

Solaris Container Manager data and sequence

The database import logs are located in /var/opt/SUNWsymon/install. These files are as follows:

importlog-CORE-hostname.pid

Sun MC core data

importlog-CORE-hostname.pid

PRM data

importlog-SCM-hostname.pid

Solaris Container Manager data

Database Backup and Recovery

You can manually back up the core and add-on data in your database, and all the configuration data by using the es-backup command. Take a backup of version 3.6.x before starting the upgrade process, and also take a backup after a successful upgrade to version 4.0. The backup data is stored in the /var/opt/SUNWsymon/cfg directory. You can restore the database and configuration data from a previous backup using the es-restore command. For more information about database backup and restore, see Sun Management Center 3.6.1 User’s Guide.
