Q: How will Zones work with, for instance, Sun Cluster? That is, how can one assure HA for a Zone in case of downtime for a physical machine? Will clustering of zones be supported in an existing version of Sun Cluster when Solaris 10 ships, or will Sun have to release an update to Sun Cluster to achieve this? A: Sun Cluster is currently not Zones aware. The Sun Cluster team is working on that. At Solaris 10 GA, Sun Cluster will have an update release on the same date to support Solaris 10, but that version of Sun Cluster will not be Zones-aware. Between Solaris 10 GA and the next major release of Sun Cluster, an update release of Sun Cluster will be zones-aware. Q: Is Sun going to implement SSL in SX (OpenSSL or SUN solution)? I mean API (libraries) for compiling programs. I know I can get OpenSSL but it would be better if some SSL solution would be included with Solaris itself. A: Yes, Sun is strongly considering providing the OpenSSL product as an alternative programmatic interface to the Solaris Cryptographic Framework for Solaris 10. Q: Will IP Filter included in Solaris 10 be able to work in bridged ("stealth" using SunScreen nomenclature) mode? A: I wish there is a subtler way of saying this, but no, and currently there is no plan of developing that capability in Solaris 10. Q: Will Solaris 10 still support NIS+? A: As of January, 2004, Sun has decided to include all NIS+ features in the next major release of Solaris. NIS+ will be included in Solaris 10 and update releases. Customers are still encouraged to migrate to using Native LDAP authentication via the pam_ldap(5) module and the SunONE Directory Server v5.x. The SunONE Directory Server incorporates the latest technology and is based on LDAP standards. Additionally, Solaris 10 includes enhancements to the NIS+ service that allow customers to migrate their data to a SunONE LDAP server. Even though NIS+ still exists in Solaris 10, we will not make further enhancements to it. Q: Does Solaris 10 extended accounting log information about the memory used by a process (or task or project)? The "legacy accounting" pacct contains information about memory usage for a process ( mean size, kcoremin). I enabled extended accounting on Solaris 10 (11/03), compiled the exdump (from /usr/demo/libexacct) , and listed contents of /var/adm/exacct/process and /var/adm/exacct/task. Although I used extended accounting (and mstate), I could not find any field to tell me something about memory usage. A: Currently we don't account for memory usage in extended accounting. One of the questions that we would like to find out answers from customers like youself is that what you want to do with the accounting data, and what type of data you are looking for: mean, max, shared vs non-shared, etc. ? That would help drive what we develop. Q: If you're abandoning SunScreen Firewall, are you going to provide software to translate rule sets from SunScreen into IP Filter? A: There is no plan to provide rule set translation tools from SunScreen to Solaris IP Filter. Q: Will it be possible to mount ZFS file system created on Solaris SPARC onto Solaris x86 and vice versa? A: Yes, the process is like this: you create a pool/pools on any platform, then assign disks to the pool/pools. The file systems are created on top of the pool. You can move the pool/pools from a Solaris SPARC system to a Solaris x86 system and vice versa. Q: I have a question about this Right-To-Use (RTU)? Why is is written that RTU is only 6 months? Does that mean that I must uninstall it after half a year? A: Software Express is like a magazine. There is a release every month with new features and fixes. We encourage users to keep updated with the technologies since that's the essense of Software Express: the latest and the greatest technologies. We also do not want you to miss any fixes in the upcoming releases. With that said, you do not have to uninstall it after half a year. That exposes yourself to a higher risk since we will not be responsible for codes that old. Q: Who will make drivers for ia32/amd64 pci/pci-x boards? I mean, wireless/network/scsi/video/fc/raid etc.? Any schedule? A: Sun is providing all the drivers critical for Sun x86 platforms, and works closely with 3rd party hardware vendors (IHVs) to get drivers ready for their hardware. We also keep updating the Device Drivers Guide to help people develop their own drivers. We use the same strategy/approach towards the 32-bit and 64-bit technologies, IA or AMD. Q: Can you say anything more specific about Fault Management Architecture? Also, what is Green Line and SCTP? A: Both FMA and Greenline are internal code names. Predictive Self-Healing is the external name for the robust RAS capabilities in Solaris 10 and Sun's hardware product lines. The technology is capable of proactively preventing system failures based on hardware or software faults by enabling improved diagnosis, fault isolation, and self-healing. As a result, customers will get:
Predictive Self-Healing is scheduled for release in Software Express for Solaris in the second quarter of 2004. For more information, please reference the docs. for Solaris Express 0X/04 which will be made available for download users together with the release of the capability. SCTP is STREAMS Control Transport Portocol. Q: When running Solaris 10 in 64-bit on Opteron will it be possible, like on SPARC, to run 32bit binaries and 64 at the same time? A: Yes, you will be able to run 32-bit and 64-bit binaries at the same time. Q: Will Software Express for Solaris release a mechanism similar to Containers or Zones where a HOSTID can be assigned per Container or Zone? A: Solaris Express 02/04 does have Solaris Containers. But, no, HOSTID is system specific. Q: Will Software Express for Solaris offer the ability for a Container or Zone to be placed in "Hibernation" so it can be moved (possibly to another hardware platform) and restarted again? This would be GREAT for running batch jobs on a variety of solaris zones, put the zone to sleep during hardware maintenence and wake it back up (in it's place) after fixing hardware... or moving it to another hardware platform. A: We are evaluating the concept, but there is no product plan or schedule for this at the moment. Q: Will LKP be available on/for Solaris Express x86? http://www.sco.com/products/openunix/lkp/ A: Solaris 10 x86 will allow customers to run Linux binaries unchanged. Q: I have downloaded and sucesfully installed Solaris 9 (12/03) on a Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading computer. However, I cannot seem to get Solaris to use the second virtual CPU. I have played with the settings in the BIOS and I just realized that maybe the free version of Solaris may not support hyperthreading (support for 1 CPU systems only). Is this assumption correct? Also, does or will the free binaryversion of Solaris 10 support Hyper-Threading? A: There seemed a few confusions here. A) Software Express for Solaris is Solaris 10 code base, not Solaris 9. So if you downloaded Solaris Express (instead of Solaris 9 12/03), it does support Hyperthreading. B) Hyperthreading support is also backported to Solaris 9 4/04 release and after. But not Solaris 9 12/03. Full support for hyperthreading on P4 will appear in the next update release of Solaris x86, the 4/04 version. This should be available for download in a couple of weeks. Note that the "free" version is actually the full commercial version offered under a free, non-commercial evaluation license, and supports SMP systems up to 8 CPUS. Note: If you have the ACPI turned off in the BIOS, or system, you won't see hyperthreading either. Q: Today Solaris 9 x86 doesn't support EFI disk labels. Will they be supported in S10? If yes, will the EFI labeled disk be bootable? A: EFI support for SPARC was released last year when Solaris Express GAed (generally available worldwide), x86 support will be available in Solaris Express 05/04. Boot support from EFI labeled disk is not available yet for either SPARC or x86 in the current Solaris 10 based Solaris Express. There are plans to include it in Solaris Express later. Q: Is there any plans to port the SAN Foundation Kit to the x86/AMD64 platform? If yes, is there any schedule for introduction of the SFK into SX? A: SAN Foundastion Kit only exists as a separate entity for Solaris 8 and Solaris 9. In Solaris 10, all of the components of SFK are integrated in the OS. Specifically:
Q: If I want to place a PO order, what are the part numbers for a Software Express subscription? If there is no part number, what is the procedure for customers wishing to place a PO order? A: Here are the part numbers for Software Express subscription:
For SPARC: Sol-Exp-SP-G-SSP Customers only need to select one of them (support is on the same site), specify which month they want the subscription to start. Q: I would like to know if there is a Companion CD for Solaris Express? Also, how would the companion CD from Solaris 9 work? A: Most (almost all) S9 Companion CD binary packages work fine on Solaris Express. Please reference the following details: Using the Solaris 9 Software Companion with Solaris Express, Solaris 10: Most Solaris 9 Companion CD packages install and execute correctly on Solaris Express(Solaris 10). Only basic sanity testing has been done and there may be issues that we are not aware of. The Java installer can be used to install the Companion CD but the progress bar is not displayed correctly. Alternatively, the command line interface may be used: './installer -nodisplay'. The packages may also be installed manually using pkgadd(1M). Solaris 9 Companion packages in pkgadd format can be found on the CD in components/{sparc, i386}/Packages Known issues:
Solaris 9 Companion packages for SPARC and x86 are available for download at http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/freeware The Companion CD is unsupported. Send comments to ccd-feedback@sun.com. Q: When will the new filesystem features (ZFS, Dynamic File System) appear in Solaris Express? A: Dynamic File System will be available in Solaris Express in the first half of 2005 after Solaris 10 GA. |
