Q: I recently acquired a Sun Netra T1. Since the server is without a bootable media, I guess I need to boot over a network to install the Solaris 10 OS. I lack another Solaris computer (I only have one with Windows XP), so I'm not sure how to set up my own installation server. Is it possible to install over the Internet or use my other Windows-based computer as an install server?

A: The Solaris 10 OS cannot be installed using a Windows machine as an install server. Since the network installation process needs to know the IP address of the machine it is installing, a public server cannot be used.

The best way to install the Solaris 10 OS on a Sun Netra T1 without an install server is to use an external CD-ROM drive. You can use a Sun-supported external SCSI CD-ROM drive. For more information, follow this discussion on the Sun support forum thread.

Q: I am stumbling on a problem found with an AMD Opteron based system running the Solaris 10 OS. The interface is a Broadcom 57xx and I have had to do an install choosing the correct driver from floppy at start of install. After the install is finished I get some strange messages, and it is not retaining its network settings even though the correct files seem to be populated.
May 17 11:06:57 screamer svc.startd[7]: [ID 652011 daemon.warning]
svc:/network/physical:default: Method "/lib/
svc/method/net-physical" failed with exit status 96.

A: The x86 devices supported by the Solaris 10 OS are available in the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). Broadcom is listed on http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/components/details/815.html. The driver can be downloaded by using the link under 'Driver Info'. The driver and the network card tested and they are working for the Solaris 10 OS. If you run into a component-related issue, send feedback to the HCL team using the 'feedback' link at the top of the HCL page.

Q: Can I change the system localization from en_US.ISO8859-15 to en_US.ISO8859-1 after the installation has completed? I selected the wrong one during the install. I would rather not have to do a new install.

A: You don't need to reboot the system to change the locale. The only thing you have to do is make sure that the locale you are planning to use is installed on the system. In your case, both the locales are derivatives of en_US, so it should not be a problem. If you want to change to a locale that is not currently installed on a system with the Solaris 10 OS, you can use the command localeadm to add the additional locale and set the locale as your default locale.

To change the default locale:

  1. Edit the /etc/default/init file and change 'LANG=en_US.ISO8859-15' to 'LANG=en_US.ISO8859-1'.
  2. Reboot the system.

Q: How do I know if the Solaris 10 OS is supported on my PC (x86 system) or laptop?

A: The hardware support information (Hardware Compatibility List) is available at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/. This site contains all the Solaris certified desktop and laptops, as well as the components that are supported by the Solaris OS. If your configuration is not listed, send an email to the HCL administrators using the feedback button and check with them whether it is supported.

Q: I have an IBM T-22 Laptop with 396 MB RAM and 20 GB HDD. I am interested in installing the Solaris 10 OS. Is it possible to install the Solaris 10 OS on an IBM T-22 laptop? I also have Windows XP and SUSE 9.2 installed. Can the Solaris OS support multiple booting?

A: Solaris 9 04/03 was reported to work on the IBM ThinkPad T22. The Solaris 10 OS was successfully installed in other IBM ThinkPad laptops. Sun offers the Hardware Compatibility List at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/. This site contains all the Solaris certified desktop and laptops.

Currently using Solaris 10 Install Tools, it is not possible to set up multiple booting. Please refer to the excellent article Multi-booting Solaris and other operating systems.

Q: How do I migrate my old RC scripts into SMF? And if XML is the only way to migrate RC scripts to SMF, then is there a wrapper available to migrate RC scripts to XML format?

A: Without knowing your RC script, I cannot give you a simple answer. There are no wrappers available to convert your RC script into an XML service. But a lot of resources and examples are available to convert your RC script. All of the manifests shipped in the Solaris 10 OS are available under /var/svc/manifest. A good article on SMF is found at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/selfheal/sdev_intro.html. The SMF forum is at http://forum.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=241.

Q: I recently got an Ultra 10 without memory and a hard drive. I want to install the Solaris 10 OS on it. I don't know how fast this Sun Ultra 10 Creator 3D desktop machine is and what kind of memory it needs. Can I purchase 256 MB memory from newegg.com, or should I purchase memory from Sun.com? Can I just use any Maxtor 40 to 120 gig HDs? Do the parts need to be Sun, or can I get generic parts?

A: The Sun Ultra 10 workstation contains an UltraSPARC - IIi processor with processor speeds of 300, 333, 360 or 440 MHz. There are 4 DIMM slots and DIMMs are installed in pairs (16 MB, 32 MB, 64 MB, and 256 MB DIMMs). You can install a maximum of 1 GB. The memory type is 50ns or 60ns 168-pin JEDEC DIMMs, ECC error-correction.

You can purchase memory from any place but make sure that it is compatible with the Ultra 10 workstation. Enquire about memory for Sun Ultra 10. You can also buy new and used memory from various places using the web.

The Ultra 10 workstation supports 4.3 GB (4500 GB) or 9.1/20.4 GB (7200 rpm). For the Solaris 10 OS, you need a disk drive of at least 9.1 GB.

Q: What SUNW packages do I need for Patch Manager 2.0, assuming I have not installed Developer Software Support Group on the Solaris 10 OS?

A: Patch Manager 2.0 packages for the Solaris 10 OS are SUNWppror, SUNWpprou, and SUNWppro-plugin-sunos-base.

Q: I am planning to install the Solaris 10 OS on a Netra-X1 that is currently running preinstalled Solaris 8. I do not want to upgrade, since I can install from a network install server only. How reliable is the install program in finding the network drivers? Will it let me use the network to copy patches/programs I need? I have followed the Netra-X1's OS reinstall instructions...

A: The Netra-X1 OS reinstall instructions are only for reinstalling the same version of the Solaris Operation System, and in your case it is Solaris 8 (10/00). If you are planning to install the Solaris 10 OS on your Netra-X1, you should follow Solaris 10 installation instructions.

Since you don't have a CD/DVD drive, you need an install server in your network. You need to set up an install server using the Solaris 10 CD/DVDs. Check the "Solaris 10 Installation Guide: Network-Based Installations" on creating network install servers (Chapter 6 and 7). You can access Solaris 10 documentation at http://docs.sun.com.

Once the install server is set up, follow Chapters 6 and 7 in the guide on how to install from the network.

Q: When I have a server with several zones, how I can install patches on all the zones while installing patches only on the global zone?

A: When you add a patch to the global zone using run patchadd, the patches are applied to the global zone and to all of the non-global zones automatically. There is nothing else you need to do to apply the patches to the non-global zones.
