SolutionTo meet the requirements set for the National Citizen Identity Information Center, the Ministry of Public Security deployed a Sun platform consisting of the BEA WebLogic application server hosted on Sun X64 servers running Solaris 10, Sun storage, and a Sun tape library. Business Results
Story DetailsThe People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the most populous country in the world, with more than 1.3 billion citizens. The Ministry of Public Security is the national police force for the PRC, charged with collecting and organizing information about the populace and is the main domestic security agency. It must make the information it collects available to authorized users. With over a billion records, the task is enormous. In 2005, the ministry began work on a system called the National Citizen Identity Inquiring System (NCIIS)—a part of the Citizen Identity Information Center—to allow authorized users to access citizen information via a Web browser. In a competitive procurement for servers, Sun was selected over several other Fortune 500 vendors by proposing the best system architecture. The ministry chose Sun because of the high performance of Sun’s products, as well as favorable pricing.
"
Sun has provided us with a platform that gives us the performance we need and is highly reliable. We will recommend Sun to other government agencies.
"
— Gao Hai Min, Director, NCIIS
The NCIIS uses Sun Fire E6800, Sun Fire V880, and Sun Fire V490 servers running the Solaris 10 Operating System to host an Oracle database containing over 1 billion records. For the application tier, the ministry chose BEA WebLogic 8.1.5, which is hosted on five Sun Fire X2100 servers running the Solaris 10 Operating System. The application servers were selected based on their superior performance and expected lower total cost of ownership. Sun storage is also part of the NCIIS, and includes a Sun StorageTek 6130 array with 10TB of storage, and a Sun StorageTek L180 tape library with LTO3 tape drives. The ministry purchased three years of SunSpectrum Support to ensure fast problem resolution and high availability for NCIIS. With the Sun solution, the Ministry of Public Security can speed access to records, while protecting the privacy of sensitive information. Sun has delivered a lower TCO, helping the ministry to cut its annual energy costs by 50 percent over competitive products. As the People’s Republic of China continues its meteoric growth, the Ministry of Public Security is confident that it can rely on the Sun platform to manage its critical citizen information. |
