Story Details

Globalia placed its trust in the technology of Sun Microsystems as it upgraded its production environment. With all its platforms now running the Solaris 10 Operating System, this project has achieved the entire upgrading of the software and hardware platforms in just three months.

To start the initiative, Sun relied on the technological collaboration of Oracle and Globalia Sistemas y Comunicaciones, the technological arm of Globalia. The three companies have taken on, with optimum results, the renewal of the Globalia production environment, increasing performance by around 30 percent and achieving stable and robust consolidation through simplification of the production environment.

" The Sun platform, coupled with Oracle technology, the know-how of Globalia Sistemas y Comunicaciones, and the high value services brought to the project enable all the technological requirements of the Corporation, which is currently involved in a significant expansion process, to be fully satisfied. "
— Antonio Calafat, Director, Globalia Sistemas y Comunicaciónes

Similarly, the upgrading has led to significantly improved availability of the system, which is up by around 40 percent for the tourist business group. The complete technological upgrade of the production environment has included the updating of both the software and hardware platforms. With regards to hardware, Globalia replaced the previous Sun Fire E15K server with a Sun Fire E25K server with UltraSPARC IV+ processors. The company also acquired Sun Fire V445, Sun Fire X2200 M2 and Sun Fire T2000 servers. Globalia renovated the storage solutions with the Sun StorageTek 9990 system with TrueCopy and Universal Replicator software and the Sun StorageTek SL500 backup library. The Solaris 8 Operating System has been upgraded to the Solaris 10 OS, and the Oracle solution has been upgraded to the Oracle 9 database.

The Solaris 10 OS provides the base for all Globalia platforms, allowing a much more effective use of resources, significantly increasing the performance of the system and guaranteeing its continuous availability. It also allows the company to make full use of the operating system on a wide range of hardware options.

For the implementation of the project, Globalia leveraged Sun Professional Services to set up the Solaris 10 OS applications certification environment, coordinate the application certification tests, migrate the production platform to Solaris 10, upgrade the backup software to support the new environment, and configure and perform tests for the Sun StorageTek 9990 storage solution. Globalia utilized Sun Professional Services and Oracle to migrate the databases to the new environment.

For its part, Globalia provided functional know-how, certifying the applications and verifying the suitability of the platform. Oracle brought in experience in the design of the logical and physical structure of the databases and their migration and reorganisation, while Sun brought forward its extensive knowledge of the platform.

This initiative confirms the trust that Globalia places in Sun technology solutions, since its previous platform was also from Sun Microsystems. Now, with the solutions implemented, the business group has optimized the use of its production environment, breaking previous daily operations records, and increasing transactions and sales.
