LGA Telecom Pte Ltd is a Singapore-based one-stop Internet Communications Service Provider that has experienced tremendous growth in its customer base since the start of its operations in 1995. The 38-person company provides services to corporations and business users, ranging from SMEs to MNCs in the areas of unified communications, mobility solutions, and network security and IT solutions.
LGA Telecom deployed Sun Fire X4150 servers to provide expandable memory, to support the company's growth with fewer servers, less power consumption, less heat, and lower cooling costs. LGA Telecom is able to meet peak loads without disruption to the system, users, and its customers.
LGA Telecom Pte Ltd (LGA) is a Singapore-based Communications Service Provider that provides unified communications, mobility and network security solutions to small and medium-sized enterprises and multi-national companies. In just a short span of time, LGA has grown to serve more than 2,000 customers. The company estimates that 20% of locally-listed companies use its services. LGA Telecom originally started its business as an electronic bulletin board in 1992 and moved to become a second-tier Internet Service Provider (ISP), providing Internet access services in 1995.
As its business expanded, LGA Telecom's aging mail servers could not keep up with the increased traffic and memory requirements. The frequent need for maintenance was increasing the company’s operating costs. As a communication services provider, LGA Telecom needed to ensure that its communication systems were reliable, high performing, and scalable to support future growth. LGA decided to acquire advanced new servers that would support those goals.
At the time, Sun was the only vendor that offered a one rack unit (RU) server with a two RU capacity—the Sun Fire X4150 server. The Sun server is highly scalable and its pricing was attractive. LGA Telecom also appreciated how well the Sun server solution worked with its Linux operating system and its applications.
Based on its evaluation, LGA Telecom chose to deploy 40 Sun Fire X4150 servers. The Sun Fire X4150 is a rack-optimized 2-socket x64 server powered by Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, with 16 memory slots, 8 SAS drives, 4 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet ports, 5 USB 2.0 ports, and 3 PCIe slots.
What’s more, the Sun Fire X4150 server has up to twice the memory capacity, internal storage, and networking connectivity as competitive two-socket 1RU servers. With more than one TB of high-performance internal disk storage, the Sun Fire X4150 server is especially suited for web serving, database, and storage-intensive applications, and offers exceptional virtualization and consolidation capabilities. Because LGA Telecom can pack more virtual machines into one server computer, it was able to replace two aging servers with one Sun Fire X4150 to provide a smaller physical footprint and presenting a potential for power savings.
The Sun Fire X4150 server comes standard with embedded Lights Out Manager for greatly simplified system management and monitoring at no extra cost. The Lights Out Manager enables LGA’s IT team to remotely manage operations such as rebooting, shutdown, troubleshooting, alarm setting, fan-speed control, and operating system re-installation on multiple computers from a single keyboard, video monitor and mouse.
With its Sun server solution, LGA Telecom has increased performance, achieved high availability, and significantly reduced downtime. The scalability of the Sun Fire architecture will enable LGA Telecom to meet future system and operational demands, as well. With a robust server infrastructure in place, the company plans to invest in a storage area network (SAN) in the future.
LGA Telecom is well pleased with its solution. “As a company providing Internet communication services, it is vital that our own communication channels are operating smoothly,” says Yew Hock Meng, Chief Operating Officer, LGA Telecom. “Our email system is working flawlessly on the Sun Fire X4150 and gives us plenty of bandwidth to scale for future growth, which is critical for any fast-growing small-to-midsized business.”
