Powering the First Productivity Suite in the Sky with Sun StarOffice 8

From a single plane to an internationally respected brand, almost 60 years of innovation and service has propelled the growth of Singapore Airlines to become one of the world's leading carriers with an advanced fleet. Story Details

KrisWorld, Singapore Airlines’ award-winning and ever-expanding in-flight entertainment system, offers passengers a wide range of entertainment options. Passengers can choose from a variety of movies, TV programs, music CDs and channels. There is also an extensive selection of video games and interactive applications including Berlitz Word Traveller, a fully interactive learning program.

For the longest time, in-flight entertainment was limited only to movies, music and lately, games. Busy executives who wanted to work through their flights would have to resort to their laptops, which can be bulky and cumbersome. Often the battery may not last through a long haul flight. Heightened security checks can also add to the hassle of bringing laptops on board.

Singapore Airlines, always a pioneer in offering the best to its passengers, felt that the next step forward would be to provide a productivity suite in addition to its world-class entertainment suite.

StarOffice 8, a full featured productivity suite from Sun Microsystems, was made available on the aircraft so that passengers can work without their laptops.

Singapore Airlines did not take long to decide on StarOffice 8. This was largely due to the fact that StarOffice is able to work with productivity programs in various formats. As a result, passengers and the airline’s technical team do not have to worry about compatibility and compliance issues.

StarOffice in Singapore Airlines’ KrisWorld offers a hassle-free work environment. Passengers simply load their data on a thumb drive and work from their seat without a laptop.
