3-D GRAPHICS PERFORMANCE

Feature: Five times the geometry performance and over four times the texture mapping performance of the Sun Expert3D graphics accelerator when used in the 66 MHz PCI slot of a next-generation Sun workstation.

Function: Delivers high-performance 3-D graphics and geometry and texture-mapping performance.

Benefit: Sets a new level of graphics performance, allowing users to capitalize on 3-D application functionality.

Note: Due to physical restrictions, the Sun XVR-1200 graphics accelerator can only be used in the 33 MHz slot of the Sun Blade 2000 workstation. The corresponding performance will be 20 M tri/sec. and 400 M pixels/sec.

RENDERING PERFORMANCE

Feature: 128 MB of dedicated frame buffer memory with support for high resolution 32-bit (RGBA) color; 3-D double-buffering with a 32-bit Z-buffer at up to 2048 x 1536 @ 40 Hz or 1920 x 1200 @ 75 Hz resolutions.

Function: Contributes to high-quality graphics image support due in part to dedicated frame buffer memory.

Benefit: Use of dedicated memory helps enable that there will be no trade-off between frame buffer memory and texture memory. The Sun XVR-1200 graphics accelerator has the memory it needs without the need to compromise in image complexity.

TEXTURE MAPPING PERFORMANCE

Feature: 256 MB of dedicated, hardware-accelerated texture-mapping memory at all resolutions.

Function: Contributes to high-quality graphics image support due in part to dedicated texture mapping memory. Local texture storage accelerates complex 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D texturing. There are no trade-offs between the resolution being displayed and the amount of textures mapped or the Z-buffering depth.

Benefit: Provides high-performance, hardware-based texture mapping operations.

Feature: Hardware-based 3-D volumetric rendering support.

Function: On-board texturing and texture memory provides high-performance 3-D volumetric rendering for real-life objects.

Benefit: Increases realism for applications such as medical imaging and oil and gas exploration.

STEREO IMAGING

Feature: Stereoscopic video graphics support at:

  • 1280 x 1024 @ 112 Hz
  • 1280 x 800 @ 112 Hz
  • 1152 x 900 @ 112Hz
  • 960 x 680 @ 112Hz

Function: Provides synchronized stereo support on on up to four monitors and synchronized viewing for immersive applications.

Benefit: Enhances decision-making.

MULTIDISPLAY SUPPORT

Feature: Dual, independent 1920 x 1200 screens supported from a single Sun XVR-1200 graphics accelerator; up to four separate frame buffers on a single workstation with two Sun XVR-1200 graphics accelerators.

Function: Provides the functional equivalent of two graphics cards and spans applications across multiple displays, providing a much larger display surface to view complex data or images.

Benefit: Enhances data viewing, comprehension, and interpretation.

Feature: Dual DVI-I video output.

Function: Supports two displays with a digital interface for the latest monitors to provide the highest possible quality while still supporting existing analog monitors.

Benefit: Helps to protect users current monitor investment while also supporting the new digital interface for the latest monitors.

ADVANCED HARDWARE-BASED FUNCTIONALITY

Feature: 64-bit hardware accumulation buffer support.

Function: Provides hardware-based accumulation buffers to support advanced compute-intensive effects such as motion blurring and soft shadows.

Benefit: Provides increased realism for decision making.

Feature: 32 hardware-accelerated lights (compared to 24 lights supported by the Sun Expert3D graphics accelerator).

Function: Provides advanced lighting calculations for an image without sacrificing performance.

Benefit: Enables realistic visual simulations and high-quality graphics content.

Feature: Hardware-based per-pixel fog support.

Function: Calculates separately for each pixel fog values such as transparency, depth, or color. Also supports more complex fog models such as linear, exponential, or user-defined models.

Benefit: Provides increased realism for decision making.
