Installation and Start-Up

First, you must download the Sun Download Manager (SDM). Be sure to download the correct version for your platform, then follow the corresponding installation instructions below.

Note: Commands you type are shown in quotes. Do not type the quotes, just the commands.

Solaris Operating System on SPARC

  • From a terminal window, change to the directory where you saved the installation file.
  • Make the file executable
    ("chmod ug+x sdm-1_1-solaris-sparc.sh")
  • Run the file "sdm-1_1-solaris-sparc.sh"
(To run it, just type the filename "sdm-1_1-solaris-sparc.sh" at a prompt, then hit the Enter or Return key.)
    • Note: As an alternative to making the file executable, you may run the file with the full path by typing:
      "/bin/sh sdm-1_1-solaris-sparc.sh"
  • Follow the on-screen steps to complete the installation.
  • If you chose to install the CDE front panel icon, you must restart the CDE Workspace Manager to see it. (To restart the CDE Workspace Manager, right-click on the CDE Desktop to get the Workspace Menu. Go to the Windows folder, and select Restart Workspace Manager.) After restarting, the SDM icon will appear on the front panel. Just click it to start the program.
  • If you chose to install the CDE front panel icon, you'll also get an icon added to your home directory in the CDE file manager (as long as you don't already have a file or directory called "sdm"). You can start SDM by double clicking this icon in the CDE file manager.
  • To start SDM without installing the icon, in a terminal window (in the SDM directory), type the filename "sdm.sh", then hit the Enter or Return key.

Solaris Operating System on x86

  • From a terminal window, change to the directory where you saved the installation file.
  • Make the file executable
    ("chmod ug+x sdm-1_1-solaris-i586.sh")
  • Run the file "sdm-1_1-solaris-i586.sh"
(To run it, just type the filename "sdm-1_1-solaris-i586.sh" at a prompt, then hit the Enter or Return key.)
    • Note: As an alternative to making the file executable, you may run the file with the full path by typing:
      "/bin/sh sdm-1_1-solaris-i586.sh"

Windows

  • Go to the directory where you saved the installation file.
  • In Explorer, double-click the file "sdm-1_1-windows-i586.exe" (or run it from a command window).
  • Follow the on-screen steps to complete the installation.
  • To start SDM:
    • Double-click the Sun Download Manager icon on your desktop, or
    • Double-click the file "sdm.bat" in Explorer, or
    • Run "sdm.bat" from a DOS or Command window.

Linux and Sun Java Desktop System

  • After downloading the zip file for the "Linux and Sun Java Desktop System" version of the Sun Download Manager, do the following:
    1. Choose Launch > Applications > Accessories > Archive Manager to start the "File Roller" application
    2. Click the "Open" button and open the zip file you just downloaded (sdm-1_1-linux.zip)
    3. Click "Extract" and choose the location to put the Sun Download Manager files (we recommend an "sdm" folder in your home folder)
    4. Once extracted, open the file browser (double click This Computer or the Documents folder on the desktop) and navigate to the directory you extracted SDM into.
    5. Locate and drag the "sdm.sh" file to an empty spot on the panel at the bottom of the screen
    6. A "Create Launcher" dialog will appear - enter "Sun Download Manager" for "Name" and, if you like, click the "No Icon" button and then use the "Browse" button to select the "sdm.ico" file from the directory where you put SDM.
    7. Now you can launch SDM by simply clicking once on the launcher you just created. If you like, you can drag the launcher to the desktop, or enter "applications:///" in the Location field of the file browser and choose a menu to drag the launcher into (this will place it in the corresponding area of the Launch menu - we recommend System Tools).
  • Note: Before you run SDM, choose Launch > Preferences > Internet to check if you have proxies configured for the desktop. The first time you run SDM, you will be taken to a Sun Download Manager Options screen where you can set your preferences for SDM (choose your download directory, set your download preferences, etc). Click the Proxies tab to enter your proxy configuration.
  • If you're running another Linux system, please follow the "other platform" instructions below.

Other Platforms, including Linux and Mac OS X

  • Go to the directory where you saved the installation file.
  • Unzip the file "sdm-1_1.zip". Extract the files to the directory of your choice.
  • You will have to make your own desktop icon if desired. (An icon is provided with the distribution; the filename is "sdm.ico".)
  • To start SDM, run the file "sdm.sh" (for most Unix variants) or "sdm.bat" depending on your platform.

Using Sun Download Manager

Sun Download Manager (SDM) is specially designed to download large files from the Sun Download Center (SDLC). For most large files on SDLC, it will insure you get a complete and valid copy of the file on your first try! SDM also works with many other Sun and non-Sun sites, but there is no assurance it will work on sites other than the SDLC. Following are the instructions for using SDM with the SDLC.

Initial Start-Up & Options

The first time SDM runs, the Options screen displays automatically. Please set or review all of the following Options:

  • Download Tab
  • Proxies Tab
    • Http Settings
If your Internet connection goes through a proxy server for http settings, check the "Use a proxy server" box. Next, enter the proxy server address and port number.
    • Ftp Settings
If your Internet connection goes through a proxy server for ftp settings, check the "Use a proxy server" box. Next, enter the proxy server address and port number.
      • If your proxy server is the same for http as well as ftp, you can check the "Use Http Proxy" box. It will use the http proxy server settings, and you will not need to re-enter your proxy server address and port number in the ftp settings section.
    • Do Not Use Proxy for Hosts:
Enter the addresses of sites you do not want to access via the proxy. This box can hold a list of sites, separated either by a space or a comma. You can also use "*" as a wildcard in the host name.
  • Authentication Tab
    • Use Http Proxy Authentication:
If you entered an http proxy on the "Proxies" tab that requires username and password authentication, check the "Use Http Proxy Authentication" box. Next, click the "Set Http Proxy Authentication" box and a popup box will appear. Enter the username and password, re-enter the password for verification, then click "OK".
    • Use Ftp Proxy Authentication:
If you clicked "Use Http Proxy" on the "Proxies" tab, it will use the authentication specified by "Use Http Proxy Authentication". Otherwise, if you entered an ftp proxy on the "Proxies" tab that requires username and password authentication, check the "Use Ftp Proxy Authentication" box. Next, click the "Set Ftp Proxy Authentication" box and a popup box will appear. Enter the username and password, re-enter the password for verification, then click "OK".
    • Hosts Authentication
This allows you to add a list of authenticated hosts, so you don't need to enter the username/password every time you download from a specific site.
      • Add Host
When you click the "Add Host" box, a popup will appear asking for information about the host. In the popup, specify the protocol (http or ftp), the host, the port (optional), username and password. Re-enter the password for verification purposes. Click "OK" button to continue. The host will be added to the drop down list.
      • Edit Host
Select the host you wish to edit from the drop down list. Then click on the "Edit Host" box to edit the host. You will be able to edit the username and password. After you enter your changes, click the "OK" button to continue, or "Cancel" to exit without making changes.
      • Delete Host
Select the host you wish to delete from the drop down list. Then click on the "Delete Host" box to delete the host. The host will be deleted and removed from the drop down list.
      • Save logins and passwords for authenticated hosts on disk
Check "Save logins and passwords for authenticated hosts on disk" if you wish to save your authenticated host list to a file on your hard drive. If this is checked, the authenticated host data will be saved for the next time you start up SDM. If this is not checked, you will need to re-enter the authenticated host list the next time you start up SDM. Please note it is more secure to not save to disk.

Hit the "OK" button when all Options are set.

Downloading

Once you've set the Options, you're ready to download. First, use your web browser to navigate to the page containing the direct links to the download file(s). Next, you can either use drag and drop (if supported by your browser/platform combination) or copy and paste to download your file.

Using the Buttons

The following buttons control the main operation of SDM:

  • Start: To begin downloading, click Start. SDM will start with the first file in the list (that has not already been downloaded successfully). SDM will continue through the list, from top to bottom, until all files are downloaded successfully. If any download fails more than the set Number of Retries, that file's status is set to failed, and SDM moves on to the next file on the list (if any).
  • Pause: Clicking "Pause" will pause the download process immediately. Always use "Pause" rather than "Stop" if you plan to continue downloading the same file at a later time.
  • Resume: If you previously "Paused" the download, click "Resume" to continue. Resume starts the download from where it was paused (rather than having to start at the beginning again), saving you time and bandwidth.
  • Stop: Caution! Clicking Stop completely cancels the download operation. If you have a file partially downloaded and click "Stop", it may be completely erased from your system (depending on how you've set the "Remove partially downloaded file on disk after STOP" option). Files already downloaded successfully are not affected and will never be erased from your system.
  • Show Details: Click to see a pop-up window containing more details about the download in progress. Once clicked, the button changes to "Hide Details". To close the Details window, click "Hide Details" or the "X" in the top right corner of the pop-up window.

The following buttons control the file list (or "queue"):

  • Add File: Click to get a pop-up box for entering the URL of a file for download. (See "Downloading" for more information.) You can only add a file to the list when SDM is stopped or in Pause mode.
  • Retry File: If you Stop a download or a download fails for any reason, it will remain in the file list but will not be downloaded automatically the next time you click Start. To download a file in a stopped/failed status again, highlight the file name, then click "Retry File". It will download the next time you click Start. If you don't want to download it again, use Remove File.
  • Remove File: To remove files from the file list, click and highlight the file(s) to be removed, then click "Remove File". (This removes files from the list only; any files downloaded successfully remain on your computer. Also note that every time SDM starts, it automatically removes successfully downloaded files from the list.) You can only remove files when SDM is stopped.
  • Reordering files: Files are downloaded from top to bottom in the list. To change the download order, click a file name to highlight it, then press Control+UpArrow to move the link up in the queue, or Control+DownArrow to move the link down in the queue. This can be done any time except when a download is in progress.

Using the Menu

The Menu Bar across the top of the SDM window offers these options:

  • File Menu
    • Options: Select this to change any of the Options that control SDM.
    • Log: This brings up the SDM Log which contains detailed information about SDM download transactions. This data can be very helpful when trying to debug download issues. Remember to clear the log out from time to time to keep from reaching the Maximum Log File Size.
      • Click the "Clear" button at the bottom of the Log window to empty the contents.
      • Click the "Save" button to save a copy of the log file to disk.
      • Click the "Close" button to close the Log window, or click the "X" in the top right corner.
      • You can also view, edit, or print the Log with any text editor. Open the file "SDMLog.properties" in the SDM directory.
    • Exit: Closes the SDM. If you exit while downloading, your download will be Stopped.
  • Edit Menu
    • Paste: After copying the URL of a file for downloading, you can paste the URL into SDM using this menu selection.
    • Add File, Retry File, and Remove File do the same thing as the corresponding buttons.
  • Control Menu
  • Help
    • Online Help: This option opens a new window containing this SDM Help file. The Help file is not bundled with SDM but rather downloaded on demand over the Internet, so it may take a moment to load. Please refer to it often, as it will always contain the latest information about SDM.
    • About: The About box shows the version of SDM you are using and the SDM Copyright Notices.

System Requirements

Uninstall

SDM is a 100% cross-platform Java application and therefore makes no changes to system files (such as registry values or non-SDM configuration files) when installed.

Solaris Operating System

  • Go to the directory where the SDM files are installed.
  • Delete all files.
  • If you set up the icons in the CDE Front Panel, you need to go into your .dt directory in your home directory. In both the icons and types directories, do an rm sdm.* to remove files from the front panel. You may need to restart your workspace manager.

Windows

  • An uninstall program is provided. From the SDM program group, run "Uninstall Sun Download Manager."
  • You can also run uninstall by running the file "uninstal.exe" in the SDM directory.
  • After running uninstall, it may be necessary to manually delete the desktop icon, Start menu entry, program group, and shortcut.

All Other Platforms

  • Go to the directory where the SDM files are installed.
  • Delete all files.
  • Delete any icons, program groups, or shortcuts that you set up.

Troubleshooting

  • All Platforms
    • If your download won't start and you get a "maximum retry" error, be sure the proxy server information is set up correctly.
    • If you are downloading from the Sun Download Center and get a "maximum retry" error, you may have encountered a security feature which limits the number of downloads of the same file. For more information, see the SDLC FAQ.
    • SDM specifically supports the Sun Download Center and is not warranted to work with any other download sites, whether Sun's or any other company's.
    • If you are behind a proxy, and you attempt to do an FTP download, but the size is unknown, your download may fail. You can increase the "MaxZeroSize" field in the SDMConfiguration.properties file to the size of the download up to 512MB.
    • Verification Properties Files (VPFs) are special files downloaded automatically by SDM that provide real-time checksum verification of files as they download. VPFs are provided by Sun for most large files on the SDLC but are not available for files not on Sun servers. If you look at the SDM log and it says that the verification properties file was not found, this is usually not a bug. Rather, it means there was no VPF available for that particular file. SDM can be used successfully without VPFs.
    • After a failure, in the SDM status column, error messages appear. They may be of the format: "Download failed. Maximum retries exceeded. See Help for more info. [1]". The numbers at the end vary from [1] to [4] and mean the following:
      • [1]: The maximum successive reconnections to a single URL have expired.
      • [2]: The maximum number of successive redirects to a new URL from a single URL has reached its limit. This protects SDM from hanging inside an error redirection loop due to a server failure.
      • [3]: This can be one of two issues. If the server reports a "text/html" content type for a download that is expected to be non-html, this error appears. This prevents SDM from downloading an "error.html" page instead of the actual download. The other cause for this error, is that you may have reached the maximum number of successful downloads allowed by the SDLC.
      • [4]: The maximum successive attempts at verification of a file have been reached.
  • Solaris Operating System
    • Solaris patches must be installed before installing a newer version of J2SE on an older Solaris version. For your convenience, the needed patches are bundled together and available through SunSolve. To patch your system, first retrieve the patches via FTP or web browser.
      • via FTP:
        • Use an ftp client or command-line ftp to "sunsolve.sun.com", then login as "anonymous" with your email address as the password.
        • cd to the "/pub/patches/" directory. There you'll find the relevant patch clusters, which all start with "J2SE..." For example:
          • J2SE_Solaris_2.6_Recommended.README
          • J2SE_Solaris_2.6_Recommended.tar.Z
          • J2SE_Solaris_7_Recommended.README
          • J2SE_Solaris_7_Recommended.zip
          • etc...
        • Download the appropriate patch cluster and README file for your Solaris version.
      • via Web Browser:
        • Go directly to this URL:
          ftp://sunsolve.sun.com/pub/patches
        • A long list of files will load. Towards the bottom of the page, you'll see the relevant patch clusters, all starting with "J2SE..."
        • Click the filenames to download the appropriate patch cluster and README file for your Solaris version.
      • Installation: Carefully review the README and uncompress/extract or unzip the patch file. There should be a script you can run to actually install the patches. The script knows what order to install the patches in, so if it exists, use it. Also, you must be root to install the patches.
  • Windows
    • After exiting SDM, the DOS or Command window may remain on the desktop. To close this automatically, right-click the SDM desktop icon or the "sdm.bat" file and select "Properties". Choose the "Program" tab and click "Close on exit".
    • A DOS/Command window should open when you start SDM. If that window closes immediately, or if you see a ""Bad Command or File name" error, and SDM won't run, your system does not have a recent version of Sun's Java installed. Please visit this site to install Java first, then run SDM.
  • Mac OS X
    • If you have trouble starting SDM, try the following:
Launch the Terminal application, cd to the SDM directory, type "sh sdm.sh", then hit the Enter or Return key.

Known Issues

  • All Platforms
    • SDM does not support HTTPS downloads at this time, only HTTP or FTP.
    • SDM will not download single files greater than 2 GB in size.
    • The Pause and Resume buttons do not work for FTP.
    • Behind a proxy, FTP requiring authentication (ie username/password) does not work when using Java 1.3 or Java 1.4.
    • In Java 1.2, for FTP, <username>@site does not work. (<username>:<password>@site does work.)
  • All UNIX Platforms
    • File permissions: SDM uses Java unzip routines which may not reset all file permissions correctly after unzipping. Workaround: Select File-->Options and set "Unzip Behavior" to "Do not unzip...", then unzip files manually using a separate unzip program.
  • Solaris Operating System
    • The Paste key does not work with Java 1.2. Use Ctrl-V instead.
  • Windows
    • On Windows XP, you may need to create your own Desktop shortcut and/or Start Menu entries, as install may not do it automatically. (An icon is provided with the distribution; the filename is "sdm.ico".)
    • SDM does not work with the Windows utility, ZipMagic. You must disable or uninstall ZipMagic to use SDM.
