The release of Sun Download Manager 2.0 (SDM) marks the first full
integration of SDM directly into the Sun Download
Center (SDLC) download page, using Java Web Start technology. As long as you have a recent Java version installed (version 1.4.2_06 or later), you can download, install, and run SDM directly from the SDLC! Just go directly to the download page for the product you want, then follow the instructions for automatic installation. (For best performance, we highly recommend upgrading to the latest version of Java Runtime Environment before using SDM 2.0.)
After automatic installation, full usage instructions are available below, or within
SDM, select "Help --> Online Help."
SDM 2.0
also remains available as a "stand-alone"
program that you download, then install. Following are installation and
start-up instructions for the stand-alone version.
Stand-Alone Version
First, download the Sun Download Manager (SDM). Be sure to download the correct version for your platform, then follow the corresponding installation instructions below.
Note: Commands you type are shown in quotes. Do not type the
quotes, just the commands.
If you are installing SDM for the first time, you will be required to accept the software license agreement.

or "sdm.bat" depending on your platform.
Java Web Start Version
In addition to direct installation from the SDLC download page, the Java
Web Start (JaWS) version of SDM 2.0 is also available from the "Get the
Software" page.
Select Directory
for Downloaded Files
Select the directory where you would like all your downloaded files
saved.
Type in the full path to the directory in the box provided, or
Click the Browse button to select your directory.
Maximum Number of Retries
If SDM detects a problem with your download or your Internet
connection is dropped, it will automatically retry the download
until it succeeds or reaches the retry limit. Use this option to
set the number of times SDM retries the download before canceling. The
maximum is 20.
Maximum Log File Size
SDM activities are recorded in a log file stored in the same
directory as the SDM program. Use this setting to limit the size of
the log file to the number of KBytes specified. Once the limit is
reached, no new data will be stored, so you may wish to clear the
log file occasionally.
Overwrite Behavior
This controls what happens when SDM tries to save a file
with the same name as a file already in your downloads directory.
"Overwrite existing file" erases the old file and saves the new file over it.
"Rename existing file" keeps the older file and renames it with a "bak" extension (for example, "filename.zip.bak").
Unzip Behavior
After completing the download of a "zip" file, SDM can unzip it
automatically. The choices are:
"Unzip download
zip archive and save *.zip file" -- automatically unzips the file and saves
a copy of the original zip file.
"Do not unzip downloaded zip archives" -- turns off the
automatic unzip feature.
"Unzip downloaded zip archive, then delete *.zip archive" --
automatically unzips the file and then deletes the
original zip archive.
Start Downloading Automatically If checked, files will
start downloading immediately when you start up SDM with files already in its file list or from the SDLC download page -- no need to click Start. (Note this works only upon start-up of SDM, not if it is already running and new files are added to the file list.)
Use automatic file verification when available (recommended)
SDM uses a unique file verification system in conjunction with SDLC
that automatically checksums file integrity as it downloads. We highly
recommend enabling this feature to prevent corrupt file downloads. Do not uncheck this box unless you are experiencing difficulties with the automatic file
verification process and wish to try your download without it.
HTTP Settings
If your Internet connection goes through a proxy server, check "Use a
proxy server", and enter the proxy server address and port number.
FTP Settings
If your Internet connection goes through a proxy server for FTP,
check "Use a proxy server".
If your proxy
server is the same for HTTP and FTP, just check the "Use HTTP Proxy"
box.
If the proxy is different, enter the FTP proxy server address and port number.
Do not Use Proxy for Hosts
Enter the addresses of sites you do not want to access via the
proxy. This box can hold a list of sites, separated either by a
space or a comma. You can also use "*" as a wild card in the host
name.
Options: Authentication Tab
Use HTTP Proxy Authentication
If you entered an HTTP proxy on the "Proxies" tab that requires
username and password authentication, check the "Use HTTP Proxy
Authentication" box. Next, click "Set HTTP Proxy
Authentication" and enter username/password in
the pop-up box.
Use FTP Proxy Authentication
If you clicked "Use HTTP Proxy" for FTP on the "Proxies" tab, it will use the authentication specified by "Use HTTP Proxy Authentication". Otherwise, if you entered an FTP proxy on the "Proxies" tab that requires username and password authentication, check the "Use FTP Proxy Authentication" box. Next, click "Set FTP Proxy
Authentication" and enter username/password in the pop-up box.
Hosts Authentication
Add a list of authenticated hosts, so you don't
need to enter the username/password every time you download from a
specific site that requires authentication.
Add
Host
To add a host, click "Add Host" and complete the requested
information in the pop-up box. The host will be added to the
drop down
list.
Edit Host
Select the host you wish to edit from the drop down list, then
click on "Edit Host". Note you can only change
the username and password.
Delete Host
Select the host you wish to delete from the drop down list, then
click "Delete Host".
Save logins & passwords for authenticated
hosts on
disk
Check this box
if you wish to save your authenticated hosts list. SDM saves the data
for the next time you run it.
If not checked,
you will need to re-enter the authenticated hosts the next time
you start up SDM. Please note it is more secure to not save to
disk.
You are now ready to take command of your downloads with SDM!
In your web browser, go to the page containing the direct
links to the download file(s). Load the links to download into the file
list area of SDM (the large white area in the middle of the SDM
window). There are several ways to load the file list:
On the Sun Download Center, just
check the boxes next to the files you want, then click "Download
Selected with Sun Download Manager." For more detailed instructions,
see the full instructions for using the integrated SDM with SDLC. You can also add files using any of the following options.
Drag and Drop
Click and hold down the left mouse button on the desired download
link, then drag the link
to the Sun Download Manager.
Release the mouse
button when the cursor is in the file list area.
Copy
and Paste
Right-click
the direct link to the download file. A pop-up menu appears. Depending
on your browser, select "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link
Location".
Go back to SDM and paste in the link using
any of these options:
Type
Ctrl-V (press the "Control" key
and the letter "V" at
the same time), or
Select
"Edit-->Paste" from the SDM Menu bar, or
Click
"Add File", then paste the link
directly into the box provided.
Use
the "Paste" key on
Solaris OS keyboards.
Repeat
this process to add
as many download links as desired.
Add Files
To
type in a URL manually, click the "Add" button and enter the URL.
Start: To
begin downloading, click Start. SDM downloads sequentially, from top to bottom, until all files are downloaded successfully. If any
download fails more than the set Number
of Retries, that file's status is set to failed, and SDM moves
on to the next file.
Pause: Pauses the
download process. Always use "Pause" rather than "Stop" if you want to resume downloading the same file later.
Resume: Click "Resume" to continue downloading after using "Pause".
Stop: Caution! Clicking Stop cancels the
download operation. If you have a file partially downloaded and
click "Stop", it may be deleted (depending on how you've set
the "Remove
partially downloaded file on disk after STOP" option). Files
already downloaded successfully are not affected and will not be
deleted.
Details: Provides a pop-up window containing more details about the download in progress. Click "Hide Details" or the "X" in the corner of the pop-up window to close it.
Add: Provides a pop-up box for entering the URL
of a file to download.
Remove:
Click the file(s) to be removed, then click "Remove".
(This removes files from the list only; any files downloaded
successfully remain on your computer.)
Note
that every time SDM
starts, it automatically removes successfully downloaded files from
the list.
Retry: If you Stop, a download or a download fails
for any reason, it remains in the file list but will not download the
next time you click Start. To download
a file in this state, click the file name,
then click "Retry". SDM will try the download again the next time Start
is clicked.
Reordering files: Files are downloaded
from top to
bottom in the list. To change the download order, click a file name
to highlight it, then press Control+UpArrow to move the link up in
the queue, or Control+DownArrow to move the link down in the queue.
Options:
Select this to change any of the Options
that control SDM.
Log: This brings up the SDM Log which
contains detailed
information about SDM download transactions. This can help
when trying to debug download issues. Remember to clear the
log out from time to time to keep from reaching the Maximum Log File Size.
Click
the "Clear" button at the bottom of the Log window to
empty the contents.
Click the "Save" button to save a copy of the log file to
disk.
Click the "Close" button to close the Log window, or click
the
"X" in the corner.
Exit:
Closes SDM. If you exit while
downloading,
your download will be Stopped.
Edit Menu
Paste:
Select to paste a copied URL for downloading into the SDM file
list.
Start,
Pause, Resume, Stop,
and Details do the same thing as the corresponding buttons.
Help
Online
Help: Opens a new window containing
this SDM Help file. Note that the Help file is downloaded on
demand so may take a moment to load. Please refer to it often, as it always
contains the latest information.
About: The About box shows the SDM version
and Copyright Notices.
SDM is a 100% cross-platform Java
application and therefore makes no changes to system files (such as registry values or non-SDM configuration files) when installed. Uninstallation directions
are different for the stand-alone version and the JaWS version.
Uninstalling the Stand-Alone Version of SDM
Solaris Operating System
Go to the directory
where SDM was installed and delete all the files.

Uninstalling the Java Web Start Version
(including
the version installed automatically on the SDLC download page)
Upgrade JRE: We highly recommend
using the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for optimal
SDM performance and functionality. If you have difficulties with
SDM, this fixes most issues. Visit
java.com for the latest version.
Multiple
versions of JRE on the same computer may also cause issues. If
possible, uninstall
older versions first before upgrading to the latest one.
When downloading from Sun Download Center, you can only download the same file completely one time. If you try again, you will get the
Maximum Retry Error. For more information, see the SDLC
FAQ.
Error message in the SDM status
column may be of the format: "Download failed. Maximum
retries exceeded. See Help for more info. [1]". The numbers at the
end vary from [1] to [4] and mean the following:
[1]:
The maximum successive reconnections to a single
URL have expired.
[2]:
The maximum number of successive
redirects to a new
URL from a single URL has reached its limit. This protects SDM from
hanging inside an error redirection loop due to a server
failure.
[3]:
This can be one of two issues.
The
server
reports a "text/html" content type for a download that is expected
to be non-html. This prevents SDM from
downloading an "error.html" page instead of the actual
download.
[4]:
The maximum successive attempts at
verification of
a file have been reached.
Downloads Don't Work on Other Sites:
SDM
specifically supports the Sun Download Center and is not
warranted to work with any other download sites, whether Sun's or
any other company's. (However, it does work on many other sites, so
feel free to give it a try!)
Download Fails with Status of "Download failed. Unable to verify":
SDM uses small "verification property files" (VPFs) that may be downloaded automatically by SDM to provide real-time checksum verification of files as they download. If your download fails at the beginning (that is, no bytes are downloaded successfully) and you see the Status message, "Download failed. Unable to verify. See Help for more info.", it is possible there is an accidental mismatch between the VPF file and the file being downloaded. You can try the download again with Verification turned off -- SDM can be used successfully without VPFs. To turn off verification:
Select "File-->Options"
In the Options window, uncheck "Use automatic file verification when available (recommended)".
Click OK to close the Options window.
In the SDM main window, click the file name, then "Retry", then "Start" to try the download again without verification.
In general, it is much better to use verification when available. Please turn it back on after downloading the problematic file
Java Web Start (JaWS) and SDLC Integrated Versions Only
This
happens when running JRE versions 1.4.2_05 or earlier, due to
a change in root certificates in later Java versions. Use a
more recent version of Java or run the stand-alone
version of SDM.
Files Checked to Download on SDLC Do Not Appear in SDM File List Automatically
After selecting files to download on SDLC and starting SDM by clicking "Download selected with Sun Download Manager", the checked files should be added to the SDM file list automatically. However, SDM may start up with an empty file list.
This issue should be resolved by installing the latest version of JRE.
During installation, you may not be offered the option to create a desktop icon, and none is created. This is a limitation of certain JRE versions in combination with certain operating systems.
Installing the latest version of JRE will often (but not always) resolve this.
You can create a desktop icon manually by opening the Java Control Panel or Java Web Start application. Once opened, locate and highlight the SDM application, then select "Create Shortcuts" from the Applications menu.
Solaris OS patches may be required before
installing a newer version of Java Runtime Environment on an older
Solaris OS version. For your convenience, the needed patches are available on SunSolve, bundled
together as "Recommended
Solaris Patch Clusters" for J2SE.
Windows
If you
receive a Windows error that it does not know how to run a
"jar"
program or "jnlp" file, install
the latest version of Java Runtime Environment.
If SDM will not run, you may have an incorrect Java
classpath. This can happen when you upgrade from one version of Java to the
next or if another program incorrectly modifies the classpath. To
fix this, make sure the classpath points to the latest version of
Java or change it to "." to point to the directory in which SDM is
running.
Here is an example of how to do this on Windows XP:
Right-click on "My Computer"
Choose Properties
Click on the Advanced tab
Click on the Environment Variables button at the bottom
In the "System variables" window, click "CLASSPATH", then
"Edit".
Change the Variable value to "." (that is a single period,
without the quotes).
Click OK to close the windows.
You may have to reboot for the change to take effect.
Mac OS X
If you have trouble starting SDM, try the following:
Launch the Terminal application
cd to the SDM directory
Type "sh sdm.sh", then hit the Enter or Return key.
SDM does not support HTTPS downloads at this time, only HTTP or
FTP.
Large File Support: SDM will download single files
greater than 2 GB from Sun Download Center only. At this time,
SDM does not support large file downloads on any other web
site.
Important: Large files require extra system processing time
at the end of the download. As a result, the SDM progress
bar may show "100%" while the Status still says "Downloading
data..." Be patient and do not close SDM. After a few
minutes, the Status changes to "Downloaded", and the
download is complete.
Behind a proxy, FTP
requiring authentication (i.e.,
username/password) may not work on all systems.
If
you
are behind a proxy and try an FTP
download, SDM may not be able to capture the file size at the start of
the download. The file size will be updated as the file downloads, and
the progress bar will not work. The download should succeed
however.
All UNIX Platforms
SDM uses Java unzip routines which may not reset all file permissions correctly after unzipping. If you see this issue, select File-->Options and set "Unzip Behavior" to "Do not unzip downloaded zip archives", then unzip files manually using a separate unzip
program.
Solaris Operating System
On Solaris 10 with Java 5.0 update 7 or earlier, clicking the "Download Selected with Sun Download Manager" button a second time on the SDLC download page will not add the selected files. Solutions:
To
add more files to SDM, use drag & drop or copy & paste
instead.
Upgrade to latest version of Java Runtime Environment
Windows
SDM does not work with the Windows utility, ZipMagic. You must
disable or uninstall ZipMagic to use SDM.
