One year ago, Sun introduced the Sun Java Enterprise System for Education (Java ES), a revolutionary, subscription-based approach to infrastructure software that reduces cost and complexity throughout the educational enterprise.

This past February at the Sun quarterly Network Computing '05 (NC05Q1) launch, Sun broadened the Java ES software strategy by announcing a new array of market-driven suites. With the introduction of these new Sun Java System Suites, educational institutions can more easily benefit from the affordability, simplicity, and predictability of the Java ES model.

Each of the new Sun Java System Suites provides a combination of powerful Web, application, and network services. Educational institutions can select the functionality they need to address specific challenges and keep their enterprises running smoothly. The new Sun Java System Suites are:

Running on the Solaris Operating System for both SPARC and x86 platforms, and on HP-UX and Windows platforms, the new Sun Java System Suites provide affordable functionality for educational institutions that do not need the complete Java Enterprise System. Each suite is attractively priced and addresses a specific set of needs. Subscriptions for each suite are just $25 per full-time faculty per year (prices vary by country — consult your local Sun agent), and right-to-use licenses are unlimited. This price represents a 50% discount for education, compared to the regular retail price.

Sun Java Availability Suite

Designed for large organizations that require extremely high availability for mission-critical applications, the Availability Suite relies primarily on the Sun Cluster software to cost-effectively deliver high service levels.

The Sun Cluster software's large array of agents permits educational enterprises to deploy a wide range of software--such as Oracle 9i and Oracle 10g RAC, Sybase, SAP, Siebel, IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic, most Java ES applications, and others — in clustered, high-availability configurations.

In the event of server failure, Sun's high-availability solution allows for uninterrupted, or near-uninterrupted, access to applications. Failover servers are not dedicated to this purpose; rather, all CPUs perform load balancing during normal operation, making maximum use of available hardware resources.

The Availability Suite runs on the Solaris OS on both SPARC and x86 platforms. For more information, read the D.H. Brown Associates, Inc. report "Sun Cluster Delivers High Availability to Sun Java Enterprise System."

Sun Java Identity Management Suite

The Identity Management Suite offers all the core services needed to use, share, manage, and secure network identity information. This suite simplifies the otherwise complex and time-consuming process of creating, managing, and maintaining user identities across the corporate network.

The Identity Management Suite gives authorized users single-sign-on capability to enabled applications, while simultaneously securing applications and network resources from unauthorized access. Sun's identity solution enables educational institutions to meet mandated compliance and reporting requirements.

The integrated Identity Management Suite includes:

Sun Java Web Infrastructure Suite

The Web Infrastructure Suite gives departments within larger organizations the infrastructure they need to get off the ground with Web applications and services. The suite includes all the software and tools necessary to develop, deploy, and secure Java technology-based applications.

Educational institutions can use the suite to offer common functions as Web services. The fully tested, integrated components of the Web Infrastructure Suite include:

Sun Java Application Platform Suite

Designed for large, diversified organizations, the Application Platform Suite allows educational institutions to develop, deploy, and manage next-generation service-oriented architectures. The Java System Application Platform Suite helps educational institutions overcome the burdens of proprietary application environments that do not allow easy integration and are expensive to maintain.

The suite provides the tools necessary to "wrap and extend" existing code in order to gradually deploy flexible, reusable, service-oriented applications. In this way, dispersed organizations can consolidate the applications they must support and maintain.

In addition to support for service-oriented architectures, the Java System Application Platform Suite provides the mechanisms — including VPN services and associated software — to extend secure, universal remote access to mobile employees, partners, and suppliers.

The integrated components of the Java System Application Platform Suite include:

Sun Java Communications Suite

The Communications Suite permits the secure, reliable delivery of messaging and collaboration services. The suite includes a highly scalable messaging server, instant messaging capability, calendaring services, and tools for developing messaging-enabled applications.

The integrated Communications Suite includes:

Getting Started

The Java System Suites help education customers meet specific challenges by providing the functionality they need, the way that they need it. A rousing success in its first year, the Java Enterprise System for Education is more tuned than ever to customer needs.
