Hello Inner Circle readers,
Sun held its largest Sun Tech Days in Singapore in January. Professional developers, programmers, Web developers, content providers, service providers and system integrators came together for a two-day conference to learn about the latest Sun software and to discuss strategies for creating applications using Sun technologies such as Java, JavaFX, Solaris, MySQL, GlassFish, OpenStorage and NetBeans.
Sun Tech Days bring innovations to developers all around the world, celebrating the open source model of sharing and networking. During these economic times, it is prudent to explore the full potential of open source technologies. If you think open source is only for geeks and student activists, think again.
Open source technologies lower customers' barriers to access and switching costs. The open source approach achieves greater value for customers by increasing participation and building on innovations collaboratively. Open source is not just an ideal development model, it is a viable business model.
Successful businesses are built on innovative software, freedom of choice, and security. Open source software offers all that.
If you are wondering where to start, start with the basics. Let me give you an example. OpenOffice.org is a free office productivity suite used by approximately 100 million people across the world, with concentrations in developing nations. Many governments worldwide, including Malaysia, India, and South Africa, now embrace the open document formats (known as "Open Document Format" or "ODF"), helping them to bring costs down and ensure all citizens have equal access to important material years from now.
How can you benefit from open source? The base technology is shared, so barriers to entry are low, and vendors compete to innovate and provide offerings on top of a common base. This gives you, the customer, the ability to choose from a wide selection of interoperable vendor solutions. With interoperable, open source products built on standards, you choose how much and what kind of service you need, fix problems and tailor solution to your specifications. If a vendor can't meet your needs, you can choose another or leverage the open source code base itself. This lowers your risk and removes lock-in.
The question you should ask today is, why not embrace open source now? You can drive innovation and bring down costs. Open source is changing the economics of technology. Try it out. You can profit from it.
Please feel free to drop me an email if you'd like us to contact you to share our ideas on open source.
