Sun's x86 Innovations Fuel Growth

Sun shines as the only vendor to increase market share in the Intel x86 processor-based server market

Sun Microsystems is known for its product innovation and leadership across many product categories. Sun’s dedication to the x86 server market has resulted in systems with industry-leading compute density, power savings, and quality. Sun was the only vendor to grow in market share in the APAC region (Australia & New Zealand, Asia South, Japan and Korea) both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter, according to IDC’s Q4 2008 Asia Pacific x86 Server Tracker.

Sun is continuing to drive innovation and product leadership in the x86 server market, as evidenced by significant customer wins such as the Australia National University (ANU) and Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) in ANZ. Sun will work with BOM and ANU on a weather forecasting site powered by two Sun Constellation systems running on an open source software stack, which is a first, globally. This further demonstrates Sun’s commitment to product leadership and innovation, particularly in the High Performance Computing (HPC) market.

Yet another example of Sun’s product innovation is the recent release of Sun’s virtualisation performance with VMware. The Sun Fire X4600 M2 server recently posted a world record result on VMmark, the benchmark developed, distributed and owned by VMware which measures performance and scalability of various hardware platforms.

Sun's strengths in Internet scale, application development portability, HPC deployment, and innovative storage and networking products enable you to use cloud computing to reduce cost and complexity, improve efficiency, and adapt quickly to changing business needs.

The Sun Fire X4600 M2 server, running the VMware ESX Server 3.5.0 hypervisor, delivered a world record VMmark score of 29.11@19 tiles; the best VMmark score published.

Sun’s approach to innovating in the x86 marketplace is clearly paying dividends in Asia Pacific and customers have responded positively to Sun’s values around compute density, power savings and performance.
