Dear Inner Circle readers,
Let me begin by thanking all of you for your support and for giving us the opportunity to share our insights on technology and business trends.
This is my third month as the president of Asia South and my ninth year with Sun Microsystems. Lionel Lim, whom many of you are familiar with and who established Sun Microsystems in Asia South, is now the president of the Asia Pacific region. Lionel built a strong and trusted organization in Asia South. The Asia South team and I will continue his good work of bringing value to you — our customers and communities.
On the topic of communities, we just hosted David Axmark, the co-founder of MySQL and a visionary in the open source community. Some of you may have attended an event in Singapore, Jakarta, or Bangkok at which David spoke.
As David noted, Sun's acquisition of MySQL is opening new opportunities and synergies for our customers, partners, and developers. Growth, scalability, agility, and security are key concerns especially for the many fast-growing businesses and organizations in our region.
The tremendous scalability of MySQL has made it the world's most popular open source database. And, increasingly, we're seeing companies around the world, including ones in Asia South, embracing and adopting open source.
The Economic Value of Open Source
In the current economic climate (then again, all good companies are budget-savvy in all economic climates), corporations are more aware of the tremendous savings and value that they can derive from developing on and deploying open source technologies. With the stability, security, and performance of Sun products, enterprise-class deployments of open source solutions become safe bets.
The corporations adopting open source are names that you are familiar with. In fact, you may be a subscriber to one of them — LinkedIn — which, as Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz pointed out in his blog, has selected MySQL to help power its rapid global growth as a professional networking community.
By the way, I'm sure you enjoyed watching the Olympics. Asian countries did very well. We are very proud of our athletes. If you caught the Olympics on NBCOlympics.com, I'm delighted to share that Sun technology enabled the live coverage via online streaming.
If you are interested to find out more about how we can add value to your business, or would like a better understanding of how the open source phenomenon would benefit your business, drop us an email. We're passionate about this and would be glad to share more with you.
