Feature Story

Green Machines

From Sun Fire CoolThreads servers to Sun Fire x64 servers to Sun Blade Systems, Sun servers are among the most energy-efficient in the industry. Sun Fire servers run cool, clean, and fast, cutting power and cooling costs. They are also a good choice for the virtualized data center because they are flexible, scalable, and easy to manage.

Sun Fire CoolThreads servers include Logical Domains (LDoms), Sun's powerful virtualization and partitioning technology. LDoms integrate the multi-threading capability of the UltraSPARC T1 processor with Solaris 10 OS, creating the most open virtualization technology available. With LDoms, you can run multiple operating systems simultaneously, increasing server utilization and overall data center efficiencies.

Also, Sun Fire x64 servers and Sun Blade 8000 modular systems are now VMware certified, enabling administrators to run and easily manage Solaris OS, Linux, and Windows applications on a single server. VMware quickly allocates compute, storage, and network resources to the business units that need them the most.

New Sun SPARC Enterprise servers make excellent virtualization servers as well thanks to their extensive hard partitioning capabilities--up to 24 hardware domains with thousands of Solaris Containers.

The Sun SPARC Enterprise family includes Sun's fastest SPARC servers yet, delivering the throughput you need with mainframe-class availability at affordable prices. The new systems are great for consolidating and virtualizing Web environments, smaller databases, and large-scale enterprise applications.

Virtual Desktops

Sitting untouched for 14 to 16 hours a day, the PC is the most under-utilized resource in the enterprise. By centralizing resources, Sun's Virtual Desktop Solution avoids the waste of a fat client environment. It uses as little as one-tenth the energy of traditional desktop systems.

The Sun Virtual Desktop Solution includes the Solaris Operating System, Sun x64 servers, Sun Ray technology, Sun Secure Global Desktop Software, and VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. Users can access their desktops from any location at any time using a variety of devices, including Sun Ray virtual display clients, conventional Windows PCs, Linux clients, and more.

For administrators, the Sun Virtual Desktop Solution offers a centralized infrastructure that is extremely secure and extraordinarily easy to manage. IT staff can create virtual desktops for users, workgroups, or departments as needed in minutes. Other management tasks, such as updates and upgrades, are also centralized. Administrators manage a few servers instead of thousands of desktops.
