Feature Story

Project Blackbox

So what if you wrapped all of Sun's eco-friendly virtualization technologies into a single package? It would probably look something like Project Blackbox, the world's first virtualized data center. Project Blackbox is a fully equipped data center in a box--a really big box.

"We built a data center in a shipping container because it's the largest box that's also easily transportable," says Dave Douglas, Sun VP, Eco Responsibility. "That portability makes Project Blackbox the fastest, most efficient way to expand your data center."

Inside the Project Blackbox shipping container, hundreds of servers stand ready to deliver supercomputer-class power, with capacity for more than 8,000 compute threads. Just plug in electricity, a cooling line, and a network connection, and you're good to go--at a fraction of the cost of building, powering, and cooling a greenfield data center.

Project Blackbox began as a brainstorming session among Sun engineers on how to build the biggest computer. Yet what began as a flight of fancy is now a reality. And during the Project Blackbox Tour, thousands have literally walked through this modular data center.
