April 22, 2008 - Earth Day is the perfect time for you to take a moment to think about what you can do to reduce energy consumption and help save the planet. Sun spends a great deal of time and resources innovating technology that makes a difference.
In addition, if all of us do few things to help conserve energy each day, we can have an impact. As Sun vice president of Eco Responsibility Dave Douglas says, "You don't have to have 'eco' in your job title to make a difference." All you have to do is keep energy use in mind every day.
SkyNews Reports on Sun's Eco Initiatives
Ecology can make the news when it makes a big economic difference.
Here are some simple, basic steps that you and every office worker can take to save energy:
- Try using natural light or a small reading light instead of overhead lighting
- Dump your computer's screen saver and enable sleep mode; or shut it off entirely
- Pull the plugs on infrequently used electronics to reduce their constant drain
- Find alternatives to energy-hogs like space heaters, for example you could wear a sweater. Talk to your facilities people as you may have a larger problem.
- Shut blinds first thing in the morning to reduce a building's heat gain in summer, or raise them to take in the Sun's heat in winter.
- Turn off lights manually - you don't have to rely on light sensors
- Get a free evaluation from the local utility to spot power drains at your office or home. Many offer them for free.
- Join a "demand response" program that alerts you or your company when hot weather is straining the power grid
