April 23, 2008 - The latest update to the free and open Solaris operating system adds important performance enhancements and is now available for download free of charge. Solaris 10 5/08, now runs on over 1,000 x86/x64 and SPARC platforms and it supports thousands of commercially available and open source applications. Solaris 10 5/08 enhancements include additional Predictive Self Healing, platform-tuned power management, and optimized support for Intel processors and graphics technology, the result of cooperative engineering between Sun and Intel. Users can select Solaris with confidence that they have complete freedom of choice when purchasing hardware for their environment. Also new today is Solaris OnDemand, a software as a service (SaaS) program that enables independent software providers (ISVs) to convert their on-premise applications to on-demand web-based services in 90 days or less. When ISVs join Solaris OnDemand they can work with Sun and hosted service providers to tune their products for maximum scalability, security, and cost savings.
