Sun Fire X4540 Storage Tour
This video tour shows you how Sun's unique hybrid storage server delivers improved storage capacity and performance.
New Open Storage Servers
The enhanced "Thumper" Sun Fire X4540 Server along with three additional Open Storage servers are compact storage solutions that offer space-efficient footprints.
When combined with the OpenSolaris operating system and the Sun Storage J4000 arrays, they construct an open, flexible Open Storage infrastructure that scales in performance and capacity while also saving on power, cooling, and rack space.
The New Sun Fire Lineup
Sun Fire storage servers now come in a wide variety of configurations that have been developed to meet the high performance storage needs of every datacenter.
Sun Fire X4540 Server
The next-generation "Thumper" ships with 48 x 3.5" SATAII Disks, quad-core AMD Opteron processors, and up to 48TB of storage.
Sun Fire X4240 Server
This Open Storage server ships with 16 x 2.5" SAS Disks, AMD Opteron processors, and 2.3TB of storage.
Sun Fire X4140 Server
This Open Storage server has 8 x 2.5" SAS disks, quad-core AMD processors, and 1.1TB of storage.
Sun Fire X4150 Server
This server includes 8 x 2.5" SAS disks and 1.1TB of storage, but it uses a quad-core Intel Xeon Processor.
Open Storage Basics
Open Storage is a combination of open source software and industry-standard hardware that significantly lowers the cost of storing massive amounts of data. Open Storage also frees customers from struggling with incompatibility between proprietary storage software, removing vendor lock-in. With Sun's Open Storage approach, customers can choose the Sun storage solution that best meets their needs, configure the required amount of capacity and throughput, and then add OpenSolaris with ZFS for management.

New Open Storage Arrays
The Sun Storage J4000 arrays are more cost-effective, scalable, and reliable than most JBOD disk arrays. Because the J4000 family is an Open Storage design they support either existing or new storage environments. They can connect to servers running the Solaris OS, OpenSolaris, Linux, or Microsoft Windows to extend server storage capacities.
John Fowler on Sun's J4000 Arrays
Sun's executive vice president of systems discusses the new Sun Storage J4000 family of storage arrays, which connect directly to servers to provide extremely scalable external storage expansion.
