Datacenter Savings by the Numbers

The Broomfield datacenter is Sun's fourth energy-efficient facility, and it builds on the designs used in the Santa Clara, California, Blackwater, UK, and Bangalore, India datacenters. Broomfield is modular and scalable, and it incorporates space consolidation, water savings, chemical reduction, and free cooling as well as Sun's energy-efficient servers and storage. The numbers add up to significant savings:

  • Consolidates 496,000 square feet to 126,000 square feet
  • Saves $4 million by reducing 126,000 square feet of raised floor to 700 square feet
  • Reduces electrical consumption by 1 million kWh each month
  • Chillers used are 32% more efficientlthan ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) standards require
  • Waterside economizer enables free cooling for more than one-third of the year
  • Fly wheel UPS eliminates lead and chemical waste created by batteries
  • Dolphin water treatment systems eliminates chemicals and saves 675,000 gallons of water annually

Out With the Old, and in With the New Eco-Efficient Systems

Replacing old, outdated systems with new servers and storage designed for energy and space efficiency is a significant step in greening a datacenter. At the Broomfield facility, Sun was able to compress space 88 percent by replacing old equipment with the Sun Fire T2000 Server with CoolThreads technology, the Sun Fire X4600 M2 Server, and Sun SPARC Enterprise M5000 Server as well as Sun Open Storage.

Hundreds of Sun customers have consolidated their datacenters and made enormous strides towards greening them, and you can read about them here.
