MySQL Powers Web 2.0

Sun's MySQL database became the most popular open source software of its kind by powering the largest and fastest-growing Web 2.0 sites. Social networking sites, online retailers, collaborative content sites, and more are all powered by MySQL -- and changing the way we live.

Collecting Tweets from Around the World

Fav.or.it is a Web 2.0 startup company in the U.K. that aggregates feeds from blogs around the world, and readers can peruse everything from business and technology news to celebrity gossip on its home page. Fav.or.it also suggests new content for readers based on the posts they've browsed and makes it easy to comment on the blogs they read. Its latest service to help users find new content is called Tweetmeme, and it collects the most popular stories, videos, images, and audio files on Twitter.

For its services, Fav.or.it chose Sun technologies, including MySQL 5.0 Database, Solaris 10 OS, and the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220 CoolThreads servers, because the company wanted a database that could manage the rapid growth of data as well as energy-efficient hardware that saves money in power and cooling costs.

Building a Business Intelligence Platform with MySQL

As one of the fastest 500 growing companies in America, Gorilla Nation Media handles media sales for more than 500 high-traffic Web sites. To help their clients determine how to best reach their choice demographics, Gorilla Nation built a business intelligence platform on Sun MySQL Enterprise. The new platform manages more than 1TB of data and provides real-time traffic and ad campaign performance information. The company also uses MySQL to capture all transactions and clickstream data that are required for invoicing and billing.

Meeting Zappos' Database Needs on an IT Budget

In 2007, online shoe and apparel retailer Zappos grossed around $800 million in merchandise sales from its nearly 3 million in-stock products -- and Sun MySQL is the database behind Zappos.com. The Web site chose MySQL because it is both robust and affordable database software, and it can scale just as fast as the company can grow. MySQL powers Zappos' mission-critical Web site, its underlying systems infrastructure, and its business-support tools.

Zappos also subscribes to the MySQL Enterprise database support service to automatically receive software updates, have access to monitoring tools, and get 24/7 technical support from Sun.

Tripling Database Performance with MySQL Query Analyzer

Big Fish Games[tm] serves over 1 million game downloads every day and plays host to more than 28 million visitors every month. Since its inception, Big Fish Games has been using MySQL, and now runs more than 40 MySQL servers to power thousands of online games. Fast, reliable performance is critical to the company's success, so Big Fish Games needed a way to improve application performance.

With the new MySQL Query Analyzer, Big Fish Games can quickly pinpoint poorly running queries and tackle the root causes directly in the SQL code. Because the tool is easy to use, even for a non-MySQL-expert, Big Fish Games tripled its database performance just three days after deploying the MySQL Query Analyzer.

Growing Quickly and Containing Costs in the Netherlands

The largest e-commerce platform in the Netherlands is a subsidiary of eBay called Marktplaats.nl, and the Web site is using open source technology to build a flexible, scalable infrastructure that can grow fast without breaking the bank. Marktplaats.nl chose Sun MySQL because it's reliable enough to protect the site's uptime and easy enough to use that the company's IT staff can deploy new database servers as soon as they need them.

In the beginning, Marktplaats.nl used the MySQL Community Edition and turned to the open-source community when they needed help supporting the database. But now that the Web site needs guaranteed, timely support, Marktplaats.nl subscribes to the MySQL Enterprise Unlimited offering for software updates, monitoring tools, and Sun tech support for an unlimited number of database servers.

Keeping 10 Million Users Happy

Mixi is the most popular social networking site in Japan, and with more than 10 million users writing online diaries, sending messages, uploading photos, posting to discussion boards, and subscribing to premium services, the company needs a high-performance, scalable platform to keep up with its users' demands. From the beginning, the company opted for open source to keep costs down. Today, its MySQL database solution is used to store all of its users' profile information, including personal details, interests, contact data, and more. Mixi also uses MySQL to handle all of its e-commerce transactions.
