Scott McNealy and Larry Ellison Announce World Record Benchmark Result
Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison joined Sun Chairman Scott McNealy on stage at Oracle Open World to announce the world record-breaking TPC-C benchmark results. The combination of Sun SPARC hardware and Oracle Database 11g software sets a new world record over 7.7 million transactions per minute (tpmC)(1), which is 25% faster than IBM's result with DB2(2), at a cost savings of over 16% per transaction.

In addition, Sun Chairman and Co-founder Scott McNealy reviewed the game-changing innovations created by Sun during its history, including its most recent flash-based memory products that enabled the world record TPC-C Benchmark announced by Sun and Oracle.
He also talked about Oracle's commitments to continue developing SPARC and Solaris technology. "Larry says we're going to spend more money developing Solaris than Sun does now," he said.
McNealy recounted Oracle's successful track record of acquiring, developing and promoting open source products. McNealy asked if Oracle would be good for Java, and let James Gosling answer. "When you look at Oracle's product mix, they're committed," said Gosling, "when you look at their product mix, it's a big bag of Java technology."
Sun EVP of Systems John Fowler announced that Sun's systems solutions, including processor, server, storage, and Solaris OS technology, now hold the #1 position in all seven commercial enterprise benchmarks, including transaction processing, business intelligence, analytics, enterprise resource planning, applications server, and secure transactions processing. He also talked about the new flash memory technology that enabled the TPC-C world record benchmark.
New GlassFish Communications Server
At Oracle OpenWorld Sun announced availability of Sun GlassFish Communications Server 2.0, the open source high performance telco-grade application server used as a service delivery platform for the telecommunications industry. Key new features include improved SIP session replication, rolling upgrade, Diameter support, and an enhanced development Framework (Project SailFin-CAFE).

Sun and Oracle Set World Record TPC-C Benchmark
Sun and Oracle announced a new world record TPC-C benchmark result for Oracle Database 11g running on Sun CMT hardware(1). This result proves that the Oracle-Sun combination runs faster than IBM DB2 running on IBM's flagship Power 595 (2).
The Sun-Oracle benchmark used an innovative combination of Sun's fast CMT servers running the Solaris OS to power the database, along with Sun's new flash technology to speed I/O.
Oracle Real Application Clusters allowed Sun and Oracle to scale performance on a 12-Node Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 cluster. Oracle Real Application Clusters is in production use at thousands of customers, enabling transparent scaling of real-world business applications.
With this benchmark, Oracle and Sun become the first vendors to achieve world record TPC-C performance results using Flash Storage technology. Using the Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array, Oracle and Sun were able to set the world record using eight times less hardware than IBM used for its largest benchmark(3).
The Oracle-Sun configuration consumed four times less energy than the IBM configuration even though it ran 26 percent faster. The Oracle-Sun benchmark demonstrated almost an order of magnitude (10x) better transaction response times than the IBM benchmark(4).
Oracle Database 11g running on the Solaris 10 Operating System achieved a record-breaking 7.7 million tpmC at $2.34/tpmC. Oracle is also the TPC-C world record holder in price/performance(5) since May of 2009.
"No other vendor today is shipping fully-integrated flash-based hardware and software that leverages a world-class operating system -Solaris - to deliver these breakthrough world record performance results" said John Fowler, executive vice-president, Systems Group, Sun Microsystems.

Sun Announces FlashFire at Oracle OpenWorld
The new Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array with FlashFire technology announced today is the latest innovation to offer customers the best way to scale storage performance. Sun is the first enterprise server and storage company to bring fully-integrated flash-based storage with flash-optimized software to the enterprise. Sun's new flash array is designed to accelerate Oracle and MySQL database workloads and optimize storage architectures for higher performance at lower cost.
Sun's FlashFire technology was instrumental in achieving a just released TPC-C world record that compared a Sun SPARC T5540 CMT cluster, powering a Oracle Database 11g with Lightning Flash against IBM DB2 running Power 595. Oracle and Sun were able to set the world record using eight times less hardware than IBM used for its largest benchmark (see below).
"No other vendor today is shipping fully-integrated flash-based hardware and software that leverages a world-class operating system to deliver breakthrough performance and value to our customers," said John Fowler, executive vice-president, Systems Group, Sun Microsystems.
Major Performance Boost for SPARC Enterprise Servers
Sun and Fujitsu announced new, faster quad-core SPARC64 VII processors and an enhanced memory controller for the Sun SPARC Enterprise server line, which up to 20 percent better performance. New updated SPARC Enterprise systems have set three new world records on key enterprise benchmarks.
SPARC Enterprise M Series servers are ideal for consolidation and mission-critical enterprise applications including large-scale databases, BIDW, ERP and human capital management. "Our SPARC Enterprise servers with the Solaris OS offer a compelling combination of mainframe class performance and reliability as well as virtualization and consolidation capabilities in an open system," said John Fowler, executive vice president, Systems Group, Sun Microsystems.
The new processors are an in-box upgrade for SPARC Enterprise servers, and are also available as an option for seamless upgrades in installed servers.
