Sun Ray Software 5

Sun has announced Sun Ray Software 5 a new software release that securely delivers virtual Windows, Linux, or Solaris OS desktops to thin clients like Sun Rays. The most significant new feature in Sun Ray Software 5 is a software client for Windows PCs called Sun Desktop Access Client (SDAC) that lets users access the Sun Ray architecture with existing Windows laptops and desktops.

New features in Sun Ray Software 5

Sun Ray Software is the software that connects thin clients, like Sun Ray 2 and Sun Ray 2FS with applications and data running on the back-end server. Sun Ray Software 5, delivers the first Sun Ray Software client that enables centralized desktop access to the Sun Ray infrastructure from Windows PCs, called Sun Desktop Access Client (SDAC). SDAC is user friendly, and it can help extend the life of current PC assets.

Also new in Sun Ray Software 5

  • Improved Adobe Flash performance, including accelerated Flash content with synchronized audio and video
  • Expanded support for USB peripheral devices, including scanners and printers, via USB redirection to Windows
  • 32-bit color display of applications running in Windows Server 2008
  • Support for Windows Server 2008 TS Session Broker

Creating an Academic Village at Colorado State University

CSU's Academic Village is a new kind of college dorm that delivers educational services directly to students from a centralized computer facility. Inside are Sun Fire X4600 servers that run heavy-duty Linux-based applications.

Fluent, Matlab, and Fortran, and Sun T2000 run Sun Ray Server software for the Sun Ray 2FS virtual display clients in each dorm room. CSU also installed Sun Ray 2FS clients in labs, multimedia classrooms, and 60 other locations around campus.

Desktop Virtualization with Sun

Sun Ray Software 5 is part of Sun's complete desktop virtualization portfolio, which also includes the Sun Ray clients and Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Software 3.

With Sun VDI Software, you can deploy several different virtual OSes, including Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 and OpenSolaris, across a variety of thin client devices. You can also host virtual desktop environments with Sun VDI Software 3's built-in virtualization or use its integration with VMware Infrastructure. The upcoming new release of Sun VDI Software will include many of the same new features released in Sun Ray Software 5.
