Console Server & KVM Definitions Rev 1.2
Console Server
Is a device or a service that provides access to the operator console of an IT asset via networking technologies. Console servers are typically used with serial devices such as routers and servers, but can be discussed as part of a wider concept; including industrial and automation devices, out-of-band management, logging and monitoring.
KVM
A KVM switch (with KVM being an initialism for Keyboard, Video, Mouse) is a hardware device that allows a user to control multiple computers from a single keyboard, video monitor and mouse.
Terminal Server
A terminal server is a device that attach's to serial RS-232 devices, such as green screen 'VT' terminals or serial printers, and transports this traffic via TCP/IP TELNET, SSH or other vendor-specific protocol. Terminal servers can be pre-loaded with software or operating system which provides centralized administration and secure access.
KVM over IP
Remote KVM devices are also available that allow multiple computers to be controlled remotely across a wide area network, local area network or telephone-line using the TCP/IP protocols and a web browser or specially designed viewer software.
Serial Console Server
A serial console server or serial console concentrator is a device that allows many RS-232 serial ports to be accessible remotely, technically it is a Terminal Server configured in reverse mode. Typically, the device has 8, 16, 32 or 64 serial ports, either DE-9, MMJ or RJ-45-wired, connected to the serial ports of other equipment, such as servers, routers or switches, by providing access to the operator console of an IT asset via networking technologies.
Console Management Server
Enhanced Serial Console Server provides enterprise and telecoms networks with a complete, secure console management solution. Management may include combined integrated power management, centralized administration, secure and consolidated out-of-band infrastructure management solution. Redundant LAN, PowerSupply, management access, or complete operating system for Customers to add their own authorization software can be provided.
KVM Extender
Remote Keyboard, Video, Mouse devices are available at a extended distance (typically 1000 feet plus) from the target system.
Video Extender
Remote Video (RGB or DVI) devices are available at a extended distance (typically 1000 feet plus) from the target system.
Fiber Optic Matrix Switch
KVM signals converted to optic fiber are switched in complex matrix deployment of systems.
