August.15.2006 - Last month, Sun introduced three groundbreaking Sun Fire x64 enterprise servers that use innovative technology to help customers better align their IT infrastructure with their business strategy. Today, we're announcing new servers and a workstation that leverage the latest UltraSPARC IV+ and Next-Generation Opteron processors to deliver better performance, efficiency, and investment protection. Together, these products further establish Sun's position as a leading systems provider for customers seeking to increase capacity and lower costs in the data center.

New UltraSPARC IV+ Systems

Today we're introducing a system-wide enhancement across the entire midrange and high-end server line, from the Sun Fire V490 to the Sun Fire E25K server. We've added 1.8 GHz UltraSPARC IV+ processors, doubled the memory capacity, and increased the I/O performance by as much as 40 percent to continue delivering world record performance and industry leading investment protection. In addition, customers can take advantage of these tremendous improvements with a simple board exchange--virtually no costly box swap or downtime is necessary. These servers are designed for:

  • Large consolidations
  • Mainframe migrations
  • Online transaction processing
  • Database applications

The new 1.8 GHz UltraSPARC IV+ processor continues to offer world record performance with 2 cores/thread, improved level 2 cache and new level 3 cache for faster data retrieval, and full binary and system compatibility. Recent benchmarks indicate that Sun Fire servers outperform comparable models from IBM:

  • The Sun Fire E25K server with 72 UltraSPARC IV+ 1.8 GHz processors beat the recently announced IBM eServer p5 595 with 64 POWER5+ 2.3 GHz processors by 9 percent on SPECint_rate2000. [1]
  • The Sun Fire V890 server, equipped with 8 UltraSPARC IV+ 1800MHz processors achieved the overall World Record number of users among all classes of servers using the Lotus Domino 7.0 Messaging server, beating IBM p5 550Q. [2]

Today's announcement demonstrates Sun's ongoing commitment to UltraSPARC technology and assures customers that they can continue to leverage their existing UltraSPARC infrastructure through the end of the decade.

New x64 Enterprise Systems

We're also adding two new servers and a workstation to our x64 systems portfolio. All products include the Next-Generation AMD Opteron processor and run Solaris OS, Linux, and Windows.

  • Sun Fire X2200 M2 Server: The best performing and most energy efficient 4-way 1U x64 server on the market. Price starts at $1,595 USD.
  • Sun Fire X2100 M2 Server: Offers industry leading price/performance for a 2-way 1RU x64 server. Price starts at $945 USD.
  • Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation: Offers the industry's best price/performance for x64 workstations. Price starts at $995 USD.

The space and price/performance efficiencies customers gain from these products make them ideal for:

  • High performance computing
  • Web infrastructure environments
  • Server consolidation
  • Virtualization

Sun plans to adopt the Next-Generation AMD Opteron processor across its entire x64 product line. Enhanced Sun Fire X4100, X4200, X4600 servers and Sun Blade 8000 Modular Systems are expected to be available later this year.

In addition, we are now offering a new Sun Refresh Service to help customers gain an ongoing competitive advantage by keeping their compute infrastructure up-to-date with the newest, fastest, and most efficient technology--enabling them to save up to 40 percent in infrastructure, software, and operating costs.

More than 80 percent of our products are remanufactured (the European WEEE Directive sets the target at 65 percent of IT equipment must be recycled,) all metal and plastics are recovered, and less than 5 percent of our technology enters the waste stream. In addition, Sun systems are fully RoHS compliant.

Sun Fire UltraSPARC IV+ Servers

Manageability Offers embedded lights out management (LOM) for remote power control, KVM and media capability, and remote monitoring of key hardware components at no extra charge.
Sun Fire X2100 M2 Server
Performance The only 2-way 1RU x64 server based on the AMD Opteron processor and priced under $1,000 that offers industry leading price/performance.

Resource Efficiency Runs virtually any operating system including Solaris OS, Linux, and Windows.

Manageability Offers embedded LOM at no extra charge that enables remote and centralized management, making it easy to monitor thousands of systems.
Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation
Performance Offers 11% better performance than the HP xw93000 workstation as proven by the SPEC Pro/E Wildfire 2.0 benchmark.

Resource Efficiency Solaris 10 OS is pre-installed at no cost; Sun Studio Creator, Sun Java Studio, and Net Beans IDE software included.

Manageability Customers can use the same architecture to run 64- and 32-bit operating systems and applications with virtually no compromise in performance.
