Innovation at Work

New Sun products enable customers to improve efficiency by managing growth, containing costs, improving performance and manageability, and leveraging eco-responsible technologies to derive more value from IT systems and enable better business processes:

  • The latest Solaris Sun Fire UltraSPARC IIIi-based workgroup servers help customers increase service levels by building out existing UltraSPARC infrastructures with reliable, low-cost systems--without disruption.

  • Netra T2000 servers and Netra CP3060 UltraSPARC T1 ATCA blades offer telco and OEM customers the breakthrough performance, energy, and space efficiency of the UltraSPARC T1 multithreaded processor. These powerful Sun servers deliver better throughput with eight times the thread density per rack versus comparable Intel Xeon systems, enabling customers to increase server performance while reducing power and space requirements.

  • California Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) customers can take advantage of a unique PG&E rebate ranging from $700 to $1000 per server when upgrading from legacy technologies to more energy-efficient and powerful Sun Fire T1000 and T2000 servers with CoolThreads technology--the only servers from any vendor in the world to qualify for the program.

Sun products also enable customers to improve security and compliance by helping them end anonymous computing, control access to data and network assets, and layer security protection within heterogeneous IT infrastructures to minimize risk and vulnerability.

  • Sun Java System Identity Manager 7.0 is the first complete provisioning and auditing software for preventive and detective compliance, helping reduce compliance costs while proactively mitigating risk.

  • The Sun StorageTek T10000 tape drive coupled with the Sun StorageTek Crypto Key Management Station delivers the industry's most secure device-level encryption to protect customers' businesses. The drive secures data stored on tape against loss, theft, or fraud through encryption; offers device-independent key management; supports common key management across mainframe and open systems; and is application independent, requiring no changes to existing backup or library applications. Sun's solution delivers more security, less complexity, and more value than the recently announced IBM TS1120.

  • Solaris 10 with Solaris Trusted Extensions is now under evaluation for the highest level of certification for any commercial operating system. Solaris Trusted Extensions allow customers who have specific regulatory compliance or information protection requirements (such as in the government, financial, and healthcare industries) to take advantage of secure labeling features previously only available in highly specialized operating systems or appliances.

Expanding the industry's most comprehensive end-to-end storage portfolio, Sun is adding two offerings that help customers simplify sprawling data centers to reduce costs and make IT operations easier to manage:

  • The Sun StorageTek Virtual Tape Library Plus is a Solaris OS-based archival system that delivers 30% better performance than Linux-based offerings. The tape library enables customers to more easily implement and integrate technologies within existing backup processes without slips in reliability or service levels.

  • New Sun StorageTek Service Plans provide customers with an integrated portfolio of support services across Sun offerings, including proactive, preventive maintenance with remote diagnostics and resolution services; cross-vendor interoperability problem management; and 24/7 access to Sun's eLearning Library and online resource centers.

Investing in Innovation

Sun is building the best network computing infrastructure, innovation by innovation. Over the past year, we have rolled out numerous technology advancements, including:

  • Our open, multiplatform Solaris 10 Operating System--the most advanced OS on the planet--which provides innovative features such as Dynamic Tracing (DTrace) technology to troubleshoot systemic problems in real time and Solaris ZFS (zettabyte file system) to enable virtually unlimited scalability

  • Ongoing UltraSPARC leadership with over 70 world records in performance and scalability including the release of 1.8-GHz UltraSPARC IV+-based servers and eco-responsible UltraSPARC T1processor-based systems with CoolThreads multithreading technology that maximize performance while minimizing space and power requirements

  • An incredible breadth of x64 servers--including blades, a 16-way system, and the first hybrid data server--that are the industry's fastest, most scalable, and energy-efficient x64 systems, offering businesses flexibility for growth while providing better ROI
  • Exceptional eco-responsibility by marrying eco-friendly product design with high-performance technologies so businesses can reduce environmental impact while gaining business benefits

  • The industry's most complete, end-to-end storage portfolio, including Sun StorageTek tape storage, disk systems, storage networking, appliance and archive systems, and storage management software

  • The first true utility computing solution that offers affordable access to enormous computing power over the network via the $1-per-CPU-hour, pay-per-use Sun Grid
