The Sun and Nortel Networks* Development Certified and Pre-integrated Platforms represent a new business model between Sun and Nortel Networks that is expected to ultimately help both companies to deliver superior solutions, customer service, and support to their service provider and enterprise customers.

The certified Sun system configuration for Nortel Multiservice Data Manager (MDM) in a Carrier Voice over IP (VoIP) solution includes a set of Sun system configurations from the Sun Netra product families designed to provide leading performance with the full suite of Nortel MDM applications, thus providing customers with the ability to greatly enhance their business-critical infrastructure.

MDM in Carrier VoIP Solution Overview
Nortel Networks Carrier VoIP solution provides next generation voice networks to run over IP or ATM packet technologies. MDM is an element manager, fully integrated into the overall Carrier VoIP management solution.  MDM is designed to manage Nortel Multiservice Switch (MSS) 7000, 15000, and 20000 platforms which can be at the core of this network or deployed as a Media Gateway at the edge of the network.

  • A robust, scalable, carrier-grade OAM architecture providing redundant feeds for operation-critical events, including fault and performance data.

  • Fault management applications for various levels of support personnel.

  • Configuration management applications for consistent network element installations, growth of those installations, and day-to-day operations and troubleshooting.

  • Performance monitoring.

  • Enhance security, aligned with the solution (e.g., centralized user authentication).

  • Standards-based, time-of-day synchronization support.

  • Key administrative applications (e.g. backup and restore).

  • Value-added capability for upgrading and patching network elements that it manages .

Note: The correct level of Solaris software is inlcuded with the SPFS software CDs. The Solaris release provided on the equipment ordered from Sun will be re-installed using your SPFS CDs.

MDM Legacy Supported Platforms
The Sun Fire V480 and V240 are legacy platforms, used in existing configurations that do not support SPFS with MDM.  For each Carrier VoIP release, the following lists the corresponding supported Solaris level:
  • SN07:               MDM15.1 with Solaris 8 (MR 02/04).
  • SN08:               MDM15.2 with Solaris 9 (MR 09/04).

Note 1: Software release Recommendation for Sun Microsystems direct purchases
    (I)SN09U is an extension of the (I)SN09 software release and supersedes both (I)SN09 and (I)SN09FF for CVoIP applications. (I)SN09 continues to be supported for TDM-only applications. The (I)SN09U software release incorporates all capabilities of (I)SN09, (I)SN09FF, and additional corrective content delivered as part of Nortel's (I)SN09 software robustness program. (I)SN09, (I)SN09FF, and (I)SN09U are valid terms for use within the (I)SN09U software release.
Note 2: Installation Recommendation for Sun Microsystems direct purchases

Note 3:  Service Requirement for Sun Microsystems direct purchases
    To ensure adequate support for the Sun platform used for the MDM in the Nortel Carrier VoIP Solution it is required that a Sun Spectrum Platinum support contract be purchased with each Sun platform.  Spectrum Instant Upgrades (SIU) are available to upgrade the warranty service level.  Please request this support contract at time of quoting or e-mail us at nortel-dcp@sun.com with any questions or concerns you have.
