UltraSPARC T1 Processing: Top Performance, Low Power Consumption

A single processor technology delivers a unified telcom architecture

Telecommunication system architectures typically require several different types of processors to meet their various requirements when using ATCA. As a result, applications, control plane, data plane, and management services are all spread out and require separate technologies. The total lifecycle costs—CAPEX, OPEX, R&D—are way too high. Now, the UltraSPARC T1 Chip Multithreading technology (CMT) processor is the first to change that equation. Appearing for the first time in an ATCA blade, it has the 32-thread simultaneous processing power per blade to let you consolidate your entire architecture under a single processor technology—the only one powerful enough to handle it all and have scalability to spare.

UltraSPARC T1 processing with Multithreading technology

By using the UltraSPARC T1 processor's CMT-based architecture in Netra CP3060 blades, you could improve your system capacity by 5-20 percent over many 2-way ATCA server blades. Leveraging the UltraSPARC T1 partitioning capabilities, you can deploy packet-processing ("fast-path") applications with control plane services using the same CP3060 blade for cost consolidation. And because the UltraSPARC T1 is a highly integrated and a low-power processor, its industry leading memory capacity is provided using eight memory sockets, within the ATCA power guidelines. A balanced I/O architecture is realized by using the new AMC technology and providing a high-speed x8 PCIe connection to the RTM.

The enterprise-class processor and OS of the future

Breakthrough CoolThreads technology delivers extreme performance and performance per watt running the most advanced Operating System on the planet, Solaris 10. With features such as Solaris Containers, Predictive Self-Healing, Solaris Dynamic Tracing, and support across UltraSPARC platforms, the Solaris 10 Operating System sets entirely new standards for performance, efficiency, availability, and security.

Legacy application support and binary compatibility, guaranteed

Software applications written to the Solaris Application Binary Interface can run on new UltraSPARC T1-based systems without modification. There's no need to port applications to take advantage of the Netra CP3060 UltraSPARC T1 ATCA blade features. The Solaris Application Guarantee ensures it.

Optimize and accelerate multithreaded applications with Solaris 10 and Sun Studio 11

Utilization rates of Solaris 10 on the UltraSPARC T1 processor are even higher than on UltraSPARC IV+ systems, due to its multithreading efficiencies. And while the Netra CP3060 UltraSPARC T1 ATCA blade doesn't require any new coding or recompiles for application compatibility, the newest release of Sun Studio gives developers the tools to significantly optimize applications for multithreaded performance. Its optimizing compilers are creating world-record application performance already.

Efficient Design

Power smart means feature-rich ATCA processing

The Netra CP3060 UltraSPARC T1 ATCA blade fits easily within the 200-W power budget specified by the ATCA standard. Energy-efficient UltraSPARC T1 processors allow for a system design that includes one AMC I/O expansion slot, compact flash support, and eight memory slots.

AMC I/O Expansion

The Netra CP3060 UltraSPARC T1 ATCA blade includes one AMC expansion slot for adding additional networking I/O capabilities and storage. The AMC site is PICMG full length, mid-height, AMC.1 and AMC.3 compliant. An optional 80 GB hard drive has been NEBS Level 3 certified.

Extreme Reliability

Fault Diagnosis Software

You manage Netra ATCA blades with the Netra System Management Suite (NSMS) software. NSMS software enhances system reliability with automatic fault diagnosis, and it interoperates with third-party SAF-compliant products. Netra High Availability Suite provides node failover capabilities and is available for an additional charge.

High Density

12U System Height

Each Netra CP3060 ATCA Blade has a total of 32 threads per blade. Twelve blades can slide into a Netra CT900 server. That's extreme density with 384 threads per server. You can also mix these Netra blades in the Netra CT900 server:

  • Netra CP3010 UltraSPARC IIIi ATCA blade
  • Netra CP3020 AMD Opteron x64 ATCA blade
  • Netra CP3060 UltraSPARC T1 ATCA blade

Simplified Cabling

No Recabling Necessary

A Common Rear Transition Module (RTM) lets you move or replace individual Netra ATCA blades without the hassle of recabling.

Flexibility

Standards Support

The Netra CP3060 UltraSPARC T1 ATCA blade is based on open industry standards, such as SAF and PICMG, giving you access to a huge range of compatible ISV/IHV products.
