V40z, dual core Opteron http://www.sun.com/v40z The press release could be found at: Sun announces dual-core processor support for the Sun Fire[tm] V40z server, at the same time when AMD announces dual-core AMD Opteron processors. In this announcement and a follow-on one, Sun is publishing two world-record benchmarks on Sun Fire V40z server powered by dual-core. One benchmark demonstrates that this server performs at 2.5X that of competitive 4-socket Intel Xeon MP (Potomac) based servers and 3X that of 8-way x86 (Galatin) based servers. The Sun Fire V40z server also demonstrates linear CPU scalability from single-core to dual-core running at the same clock speed, on Solaris (internal data). With Sun Fire V40z servers powered by dual-core, customers can save up to $2.5M per year in power and cooling costs when deployed in a 10,000-core grid, compared with 10,000 cores deployed using 4-socket Xeon MP (Potomac) based servers. Solaris 9, Solaris 10, and selected versions of Red Hat and SUSE Enterprise Linux will be supported. Windows Server 2003 will be certified. When run with Sun Cluster on Solaris 9, the Sun Fire V40z server powered by dual-core is a highly available 8-way server that offers high performance, high reliability, and flexibility for server consolidation, data management, and enterprise applications. Since the Sun Fire V40z server powered by dual-core uses the same system chassis, memory, disks, and I/O as the single-core 852 version of the V40z server, there is only an incremental price to support dual-core processors. Upgrade from single-core 852 to dual-core simply involves changing the CPUs and upgrading the firmware. An upgrade will be offered in the summer. Also, dual-core support will be made available on the Sun Fire V20z server in the summer.
