Nottingham (UK) Opens $9M Supercomputing Facility: 3Tf Sun Supercomputer

http://news.taborcommunications.com/msgget.jsp?mid=392249&xsl=story.xsl

One of the world's most powerful supercomputers was officially unveiled at The University of Nottingham on June 1, Bio is One of Four Main Application Areas for 3Tf Sun Supercomputer "University of Nottingham researchers in the Schools of Pharmacy, Civil Engineering, Physics & Astronomy and Chemistry are undertaking four pilot projects using the HPC facility...[including] Protein folding and dynamics - the HPC allows, for the first time, a simulation of the whole process by which proteins 'unfold'. The failure of this process is implicated in many diseases, and a better understanding could lead to advances in the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer's and diabetes."

Based on a very large Sun/AMD Opteron cluster with 544 V20z nodes (1088 cpus), running Solaris 10 and Sun Grid Engine, achieves 3Tf.
