The Solaris Basic Service Plan is Sun's least expensive support plan, it includes:
- On-line System Administration Resources. Customers will have around the clock access to a variety of exclusive technical resources including access to: Sun Solve knowledge base, Sun System Handbook. Complete collection of technical artifacts, features and security papers.
- Support Notification Services. Customers receive all Sun Alerts for covered products, including those for which Sun is still working on a fix. While this may sound premature, this early warning system helps you get a jump start on risk mitigation. In addition, Sun provides special content in the BigAdmin newsletter to keep you up-to-date on Sun Service Plan enhancements.
- Solaris OS Updates. Solaris named releases Solaris updates and software updates. Solaris 10 OS is free to download, but a Sun Service Plan is required to receive the majority of ongoing updates and patches. Service plan customers receive notification of update availability and electronic access, as well as access to patch management tools. (If customer purchase a pull or push media update, they receive the 8 DVD media kit update of the entire Solaris Enterprise System ? not just the OS).

Yes. The software received through the initial download or media kit purchase or through updates can be distributed through the University intranet. The Solaris Enterprise System licensing terms allow for Research and Instructional Use, Commercial Use and Service Provider Use. However, the benefits of Sun Update Connection are tied to a specific system. To insure automated receipt of regular updates and patches it is recommended that you purchase the tier which covers the number of systems in the University

The benefit to buying a Basic Tier service plan to replace the EduSoft Academic Edition media kit subscription is that in a large university enterprise, distribution of patches and updates may be delayed. Researchers and teachers who need the convenience of regular updates delivered to their department may benefit from the convenience of delivery of the media kit.

Without a Service Plan, customers are not entitled to telephone support, on-line staffed support nor education services. However all registered customers are able to access select portions of the self-help content made available through the sun.com web site. All registered customers are also able to use Sun Update Connection service for intelligent software update services for single or multiple systems. Note that only a portion of software updates are available for registered customers without a Service Plan.

With a service plan, software updates are made available individually to customers as soon as the updates are released, allowing customers to decide if and when they want to adopt a specific feature. Without a plan, registered customers can only get software updates rolled all together into a complete OS release, and only when the complete OS release is made available on a periodic basis with timing determined by the Sun release process. Security software updates and driver updates are exceptions. These are made available individually as soon as they are released to registered customers with or without service plans. |

In order to use the Solaris 10 software for perpetual commercial use, you must obtain the Entitlement Document. The Entitlement Document is delivered to you either with a new Sun machine, from Sun Service as part of your service agreement, or via email when you register your machines through the Sun Download Center. For this reason, ensure that you have the correct email address in your Sun Download Center account before trying to register your Solaris 10 machines. If you do not receive the Entitlement Document, you are only allowed to use the software for 90 days of evaluation usage.
The Entitlement Document is an adjunct to the Software License Agreement (SLA), which always accompanies the Solaris Operating System software. The SLA sets forth the terms under which Sun Microsystems, Inc. allows an end user to use the Solaris software for evaluation purposes for 90 days and is a binding legal agreement between Sun and the end user. End users should be sure to review the SLA in its entirety; any legal questions should be directed to the end user's own legal counsel.
Please note that because the license granted by Sun is non-transferable, end users may not give the Solaris software to any third party. |

To obtain the right-to-use (RTU/Entitlement) for unlimited use of Solaris 10, the customer must register their Solaris installations to receive the Entitlement document, which provides the additional terms and perpetual right to use Solaris.
Customers can download the Solaris software for free at http://sun.com/solaris. They will register and be able to print their RTU as part of the download process.
Customers who purchase the physical media kit will need to register at the link provided at http://sun.com/solaris. They will be then have access to the RTU to print or download for their records. and receive the Entitlement document, which provides the additional terms and perpetual right to use Solaris.
New Sun Ultra-SPARC hardware is automatically licensed to use the currently available versions of the Solaris OS. No registration is required for these customers.
If a customer does not have access to the web, he or she should contact a Sun sales representative to register their software.
