Low Total Cost of Ownership

Performance pays

The Netra 440 server delivers exceptional price/performance and functionality to help lower your total cost of ownership. This carrier-grade, four-processor server represents a significant improvement in price/performance over competitive four-way systems. For example, you get the power of up to four 1.28/1.6-GHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors. Yet, its integrated, 64-bit Superscalar SPARC V9 architecture is great for low-cost and low-power requirements. It lowers the acquisition cost of reliable, available, high-power computing. And, speaking of reliability, availability, and security, the SPARC/Solaris architecture really helps minimize errors, system failures, and unexpected costs.

Availability pays off too

Sun's innovative availability-promoting features, such as Automatic System Recovery (ASR), increase application uptime and minimize the need for manual intervention, saving money. Simplified manageability and serviceability, especially across a number of servers, can really save time and lower costs. Redundant hot-swappable components, AC/DC power, and Sun's Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM) are time-saving, cost-saving higher-availability features.

Saving space saves

The Netra 440 server is packaged in a rack-optimized, 5U, 19.5-inch deep form factor for high compute density and data center space savings. This compact design gives you maximum value per rack unit and leaves ample room for cable management.

Backward compatibility, forward momentum, investment protection

The end-to-end SPARC/Solaris architecture ranges from one to 106 processors. That's long-term investment protection for your Sun servers, storage, network equipment, and Solaris software. Solaris binary and application compatibility eliminates the cost and delay of porting applications.

Reliability and Availability

Certified tough

The Netra 440 server provides a number of features to deliver excellent reliability and availability. NEBS Level 3 certification (DC version only), NEBS level 3 compliant (AC version) enables continuous operation in earthquake risk Zone 4 environments and complies with regulations for deployment in central telco office environments. Certification also means that ruggedized Netra 440 servers have passed tests showing that they can tolerate extremes of temperature and humidity; operate in environments where there is dust, pollutants, or other air contaminants; retard fire; and resist other electrical hazards. In addition, the SPARC/Solaris architecture delivers the reliability, availability, and security users expect from Sun servers.

Steady power

The Netra 440 server comes with four hot-pluggable AC or DC power supplies with separate power cords. The system requires two of the power supplies for normal system operation, enabling the other two power supplies to be configured to provide redundancy and load sharing to enhance system availability and application uptime. DC power is less susceptible to power spikes than AC power and can be used for battery backup of the power supply.

Hands-off recovery

The server's Automatic System Recovery (ASR) monitors system components and automatically configures around failed DIMMs or PCI cards to restore system to operation as quickly as possible, increasing system availability and minimizing the need for manual intervention.

High Performance

64-bit processing nails the big stuff

The Netra 440 server incorporates Sun's latest low-cost, high-performance processor technology, with up to four UltraSPARC IIIi processors delivering excellent performance, increased system efficiency, and better scalability. The 64-bit SPARC V9 architecture also enables the system to handle 64 bits of data simultaneously versus 32 bits. This 64-bit processing increases application scalability and performance, particularly for applications with large files, large numbers of files, or a large number of users.

Fast I/O, low latency Jbus

Dual integrated 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet ports provide increased throughput and redundancy, enhancing the efficiency of network traffic while ensuring data integrity. A 2.67-GBps Jbus interconnect also increases system efficiency by ensuring scalability with minimal contention and latency between processing and I/O subsystems.

Manageability

Lights out, costs down

The Netra 440 server lets you leverage the power of sophisticated manageability. Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM) monitors and reports system status, component status, and environmental conditions from a single console via a network or serial connection. By enabling remote system management and diagnosis, ALOM increases staff productivity and system availability, helping to cut your system management costs.

Easier recovery

The Netra 440 server also comes standard with a system configuration card (SCC), unique in the industry. The SCC is a plastic card that stores system host ID, MAC addresses, and NVRAM settings. In the event of a failed system, the SCC allows administrators to quickly and easily transfer system data to a standby server for rapid recovery.

Alarms

Four programmable dry contact alarms--critical, major, minor, and user-defined--further enhance system manageability and availability. These alarms enable use of a relay to signal fault conditions to a rack or control room as well as to an alarm monitoring system.

Serviceability

Rack and run

The Netra 440 server also offers numerous features to simplify serviceability. The system comes standard with a 19-in., two-post and four-post rackmount kit, which fits your industry racks. A standard flip-down bezel further reduces service time.

Don't miss a beat

With up to four hot-swappable, front-accessible, 146-GB Ultra320 SCSI hard drives, the Netra 440 server supports online maintenance and repair. Hot-swappable fan trays, hot-pluggable power supplies, and modular field replacement units (FRUs) streamline system maintenance and enhance availability. Front and back LEDs offer quick visual IDs of power and fault status.

Flexibility

Flexible all over

The Netra 440 server provides flexibility in system configuration to help meet changing business and application requirements. The server comes with a 19-in., 2-post and 4-post rackmount kit that accommodates most racks. A 23-in., two-post, 600 mm x 600 mm rackmount kit and a 19-in., four-post slide rail rackmount kit are also available, enabling the server to fit into virtually any rack environment. In addition, six full-length, 64-bit PCI slots provide industry-standard I/O adapters that allow connectivity to additional network, storage, or graphics devices. An optional DVD RW drive offers increased flexibility by providing data storage on a removable media access device.

Sun Customer Ready systems program can deliver racked, cabled, ready-to-deploy Netra 440 servers right to your site. The Sun Customer Ready systems program provides factory integration of hardware and software based on your specifications, significantly reducing the amount of resources required for deployment, system deployment time, and early-life system failures for improved return on investment.

UltraSPARC Processing

High entry-level performance

The Netra 440 server is four-processor system based on Sun's low-cost, high-performance UltraSPARC IIIi processor technology, designed for entry-level systems. Offering excellent price/performance, the Netra 440 server delivers the power of up to four 1.28/1.6-GHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors.

IIIi

The UltraSPARC IIIi processor is a highly-integrated processor that implements the 64-bit, SPARC V9 architecture and Sun's Visual Instruction Set (VIS). The UltraSPARC IIIi processor contains primary data and instruction caches and a unified 1MB of Level 2 cache. It also contains a DDR-1 SDRAM memory controller, a JBus controller, and sophisticated power management capabilities.

Suitable applications

A high-performance integrated processor, the UltraSPARC IIIi processor is used with a wide range of applications. Its RISC architecture and VIS technology make it ideally suited for compute servers and embedded applications in telecommunications and imaging. VIS support is the means to accelerate multimedia, networking encryption, and Java processing.

Platform protection

Sun systems adhere to a consistent, binary compatible system design, based on SPARC technology, Solaris OS, and an SMP architecture. This design consistency from generation to generation gives Sun systems a degree of compatibility not available from any other platform vendor, protecting your investment in applications and labor.
