SPARC Server Reviews

  • Preview: Sun's Two-Way Eight-Way
    InfoWorld - 04/09/08
InfoWorld posted a very positive preview of the SPARC Enterprise T5240 server that positions Sun as the nominal leader in cores per socket. The review highlights the major features that differentiate the T5240 from other servers, such as its multi-core design that can support up to 128 threads and 128GBs of RAM in a 2U form factor.
  • Lab Test: Sun's Octo-Core SPARC is Made to Multitask
    InfoWorld - 03/27/08
InfoWorld published a positive in-depth review of the Sun SPARC T5120, giving it an 8.3 out of 10. The review, conducted by Paul Venezia, discusses the new features that differentiate the T5120 from servers based on the Sun's previous processors. The reviewer discusses why the T2 processor is significant, stating, "this architecture is a significant departure from the rest of the industry, and positions these servers to fill specific, highly transactional roles, foregoing the rest. In that capacity, they do quite well."
  • The SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220
Sparks and White Noise - 02/11/08
In this review, Octave Orgeron calls the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers "amazing" and represents a huge advancement in server technology. He also states that the UltraSPARC-T2 processor is the second generation of the CMT processor design from Sun and is really a system on a chip.
  • T1000 in more detail
    ComputerWorld - 09/01/06
In the first part of this two-part T1000 review, MC Brown discusses the fact that the T1000 wins out, "once you start to ramp up the simultaneous requests." So far, Brown has been able to achieve 256 smaller simultaneous requests on the T1000 with only a small dip in per-request performance.
  • Test Driving Sun's T2000
    ServerWatch - 08/03/06
In Serverwatch's review of the T2000, Charlie Schuling noted that the T2000 is one serious server, with a host of innovative features due largely to the new T1 processor. According to Schluting, the T2000 is "truly an amazing machine, and is well-suited for the most important roles in your data center."

  • Sun's Energy Super Saver
    CRN - 06/09/06
According to Marc Spiwak, the T1000 server is ideal for power-and space-constrained applications where computing horsepower cannot be compromised. Spiwak explained that, similar to the latest dual-core Pentium processors but a lot more powerful, the UltraSPARC T1 processor can be purchased with as many as eight four-way multithreaded processing cores and can process up to 32 simultaneous threads. He also gave the nod to Solaris, noting that Solaris 10 operating system is ideal for the T1000 server and other systems containing multicore processors.
  • T2000 faster than I need
    Computerworld - 04/24/06
In a positive blog review, MC Brown explainde that the T2000 is actually faster than anything he needs at the moment. He explained that, while he does not require all of the power in the machine, he can think of many companies that can use all of the power provided.
  • Sun's T2000 "Coolthreads" Server: First Impressions and Experiences
    AnandTech - 03/24/06
In a positive review of the UltraSPARC T1-based Sun Fire T2000 server in AnandTech (part one of two reviews), reviewer Johan De Gelas praised the T2000 for the RAS and power consumption advantages that it delivers versus x86 processor-based servers, concluding that "Sun's solid engineering has impressed us... So far, the Sun T2000 has been one of the best-made servers that we have seen...it is definitely the most attractive Sun Server that we, as 'x86 server buyers', have seen in years."
  • Niagara Shows Its Stuff
    eWEEK - 01/02/06
In a positive review in eWEEK, reviewer Anne Chen highlighted the value propositions delivered with the UltraSPARC T1 processor-based Sun Fire T2000, noting that "the Sun Fire T2000 server provides exceptional performance while lowering power consumption and improving server density." Anne concluded that "Sun's Sun Fire T2000 server makes a revolutionary technology leap with the UltraSPARC T1 processor--something that really makes the server, and Sun, stand out from the competition."
