Overview

MySQL 5.1 Community Edition and GlassFish Application Server v2 Update Release 2 (UR2) application server are now available to download. We're pretty excited about these products, but we want to know how you, the student developers, can develop useful applications using the new features of these products.

The latest MySQL 5.1 Community Edition database has a number of new features -- innovative use of XML features through XPath, use of full-text search, use of task scheduler to make your application more portable when performing routine tasks, and combinations of storage engines (for example, InnoDB for transactions, then MyISAM for full-text, and so on).

In the GlassFish v2 UR2 release, this leading open-source, Java EE 5-based application server adds clustering, in-memory replication, improvements to the Grizzly-based HTTP engine, self-management capabilities, and great performance. You can now develop and deploy Java EE modules using NetBeans and take advantage of the enhanced administrative functionality.

Download MySQL 5.1 Community Edition and GlassFish v2 UR2 application server. Check them out for yourself by developing a web application. After you have a chance to use both the products, write reviews to tell the world what you think. A panel of judges will review all submissions and select the winners.

The contest will have two groups: one for students who are not Sun Campus Ambassadors, and another comprising Sun Campus Ambassadors. For each group, there will be a grand prize of $500 in Visa debit card, and five second prizes of $250 each in Visa debit card.

Selected submissions will be highlighted in Sun's Student Views and Reviews site at the end of the contest period, so participate for the fun and increased traffic to your site as well!

Contest Guidelines

To participate, you need to be enrolled as a student pursuing a degree in an educational institute and be able to prove your educational institute affiliation.

All developed applications, written materials, and reviews must be in English and must remain accessible through December 31, 2008.

The Sun Student Views and Reviews site will link to as many interesting submissions as possible at the end of the contest period, so even if you don’t win, you might get a bunch of traffic!

See complete contest rules for all the details.

Judging Criteria

All entries will be judged by a panel of experts based on the following equally weighted judging criteria: novelty, originality, and usefulness of the application developed; creative use of MySQL 5.1 and GlassFish v2 UR2 features, clarity and completeness of the documentation, coding practices used, usefulness and character of the substantive feedback in the review, and the review's interest and appeal to other users of MySQL and GlassFish.

Extra Credit: If you host your developed web application and we can directly access it for testing, then that will be added bonus points. However, this is not mandatory as we will be deploying your applications on our own to verify.
