The compute environment is the core of your functionality. Today's biggest IT challenge is how to optimize data center efficiency and business productivity. Demand is growing rapidly for host computers that can communicate better with other computers and network components, so complex jobs can run in parallel to achieve greater efficiency and lower costs. This calls for increased use of throughput and parallel computing — running several applications at once across clusters of multiprocessor and uniprocessor machines.

These are the requirements that Sun's HPTC users tell us they're looking for:
  • High performance capability and bandwidth that can handle the most demanding technical applications
  • Scalable solutions that can grow with your business
  • A complete, end-to-end architecture — built on open standards — which accounts for the special needs of technical computing.
Sun is dedicated to delivering HPTC platforms and solutions based on open standards and heterogeneous network support. Sun appreciates the need to deliver a high degree of interoperability and platform-independence to empower our customers with freedom of choice.

Sun is also in the forefront in meeting our technical computing customers' demands for reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS). Our products bring many technology strengths to your computing environment, such as high bandwidth and low latency, with internal bandwidths of up to 172 gigabytes per second, and low SMP-class latency. Additionally, Sun servers and storage systems are built for massive scaling.
  • Sun Fire 15K offers capacity up to 190 gigaflops, with Sun Cluster software capable of stretching capacity up to 1 teraflop
  • Sun's largest systems support up to 576 gigabytes of memory
  • High-speed I/O delivers up to 43 gigabytes per second
  • Sun HPC SAN moves data at up to 2 gigabytes per second
  • Sun offers three tiers of system interconnects that accommodate both fat and thin mode clusters.
On the horizon, Sun is working to deliver even more power and scalability. We are developing an integrated hardware/software stack that will simplify the process of deploying clusters for parallel computing. The Sun integrated Clusters solution can deliver hundreds of thousands of processors as a computing resource for HPTC applications, based on:
  • Compute nodes consisting of Netra, Entry, and Enterprise servers
  • Interconnects such as Ethernet, Myrinet, and Fire Link
  • Cluster-wide storage for shared file system access through storage area networks (SANs).
This solution will include design blueprints that will help your organization set up clustered environments, provide a range of interconnect options to meet your organization's budgets and performance requirements, and provide seamless integration with Sun's HPC SAN solution for transparent access to data.
