Ranging from 4RU rack mounted units and midframes to enterprise servers and clusters, Sun offers a full selection of systems to meet your organization's price, capacity, and performance requirements. Furthermore, the binary compatibility of all of our platforms provides your organization the flexibility to move applications or migrate to larger systems — all without many of the usual headaches of migration.

Rack-Mounted Servers
Providing the convenience of small form factors, Sun offers two models suited for high performance computing needs that can easily fit into the same racks that your organization may already be using, delivering the reliability of UNIX at price points that are competitive with "Lintel" (Intel-based Linux) systems. They include:
  • Sun Fire 280R Server — A compact, form factor unit that fits into a 19-inch wide, 36-inch deep rack, the Sun Fire 280R server speeds data throughput using a fast 4.8-GB/second internal backplane that eliminates the need for a central bus. The system's standard PCI external bus provides access to a wide selection of third-party adapter cards. Available with 33MHz and 66MHz versions, you can select the right configuration based on the processing requirements of your applications.

  • Sun Fire V880 Server — For users requiring more scalability from their rack-mounted units, Sun offers the Sun Fire V880 Server. Based on the new UltraSPARC III architecture, the system offers a six-port, 9.6-Gbyte/second Sun Fireplane Interconnect backplane, plus key RAS features that reduce system maintenance requirements.
Sun Fire Midframe Servers
Sun Fire 4800 and 6800 "midframe" servers provide many of the RAS (reliability, availability, scalability) and high-performance features associated with high-end systems in small footprints. The Sun Fire 4800 and 6800 servers, supporting up to 12- and 24-CPU, respectively, support traditional mainframe class features such as dynamic system domains, dynamic reconfiguration and full hardware redundancy. Sun's midframe servers are the right choice for HPTC users with high-memory bandwidth and large memory computing needs.

We have brought advanced crossbar technology down into the midframe space, which enables scalable high-bandwidth systems, and our unique dynamic system domain capability.

Sun Fire Enterprise Servers
With up to 106 processors, 576 GB of memory, and support for 250 TB of online disk storage, the Sun Fire 15K server is the most scalable and powerful server in Sun's product line, supporting up to 106, 64-bit UltraSPARC III processors and 576 GB shared memory. And, of course, the Sun Fire 15K server provides the RAS and resource management capabilities that HPTC users demand of enterprise-class systems.

The Sun Fire 15K server is our most powerful platform. At the heart of the system is the Sun Fireplane architecture, an evolutionary advance in interconnect technology that capitalizes on UltraSPARC III processor performance by providing superior memory and I/O bandwidth, ensuring near linear scalability under the most demanding workloads. Three separate 18X18 crossbars (address, response, and data) ensure that signals flow without contention, resulting in a delivered peak global bandwidth of 43.2 GB per second and aggregate local bandwidth of 172.8 GB per second.

Furthermore, the Sun Fireplane Interconnect's support of mixed-speed CPUs makes the system extremely flexible. By allowing all processors to run at their rated clock speeds, the performance of faster processors will not be held back by slower units on the same system.

With up to 52 CPUs, the Sun Fire 12K server is server is an ideal platform for large-scale HPTC. Built with the Uniboard and the scalable Solaris Operating Environment (OE) and the UltraSPARC(r) III Cu processors that provides binary compatibility across generations and products, the Sun Fire 12K server is ideal for workloads that aren't big enough for the Sun Fire 15K server, but too big for the Sun Fire 6800 server. The Sun Fire 12K server allows you to focus on your short-term needs without having to worry about satisfying demand down the road. And it's fully upgradable to a Sun Fire 15K server on the fly — without powering down the system — if and when you need it.

Clusters
Using the power of interconnects, Sun provides the ability to cluster any of these systems, from the Sun Fire 280R server up to the Sun Fire 15K, to help your organization aggregate your technical computing resources. Sun offers a variety of interconnects, including Gigabit Ethernet, Myrinet (from Sun's partner Myricom), or Sun's own interconnect technology. Our HPC ClusterTools 4 software provides support for up to 64 nodes in a cluster and up to 2048 processes cooperating on a single parallel application. This allows us to scale clustered solutions to over 2 Teraflops of peak capability.
