Sun Microelectronics is built on a completely flexible engagement model. How you integrate our innovations
is up to you and your design: Choose a full processor, a chip, modular blocks, or licensable IP. You choose whatever form
works best for your business.
UltraSPARC T2
The UltraSPARC T2 processor is the industry's first "system on a chip," packing the most cores and threads of any general-purpose processor available, and integrating all the key functions of a server on a single chip: computing, networking, security, and input/output (I/O), plus tight integration with the Solaris operating system.
At A Glance
- The UltraSPARC T2 processor is the fastest commodity processor with two world-record single-chip SPEC CPU results, based on tests that delivered 78.3 est. SPECint_rate2006 and 62.3 est. SPECfp_rate2006
- Powered by less than 95 watts (nominal) with less than 2 watts per thread, this next generation UltraSPARC T2 processor boasts the most functionality, and lowest wattage per core and thread of any processor in its class
- Integrated multithreaded 10 Gb Ethernet networking
- Integrated PCI Express I/O expansion
- Integrated floating point and cryptographic processing units per core

IP Licensing
Want to integrate more functionality into your design? Take advantage of our Sun-proven innovation in the form of licensable IP.
Stream Processing Unit (SPU) (Cryptographic Accelerator)
The cryptographic accelerators incorporated into the UltraSPARC T2 are available as licensable IP. Sun's Stream Processing Unit (SPU) is composed of two, independent sub-units that work in parallel: A modular arithmetic unit, and a cipher/hash unit. The cipher unit supports ten of the most common ciphers (both public-key and symmetric key) and secure hashes, including NSA (National Security Agency) approved algorithms. The following ciphers and hashing functions are supported: DES, 3DES, AES, RC4, SHA1, SHA256, MD5, RSA to 2048 key, ECC, CRC32.
Multithreaded 10 Gb Ethernet
Sun's dual multithreaded 10 Gb Ethernet is available as an ASIC and as licensable IP. With up to 32 DMA channels, Sun's multithreaded 10 Gb Ethernet helps eliminate I/O bus bottlenecks, enabling fast network access and system to system communications. The first thread aware NIU in the industry, Sun's design incorporates hardware packet classification and numerous transmit and receive DMA channels, so network processing can be distributed across multiple processor cores and threads, as seen in the UltraSPARC T2 processor, for vastly improved network throughput.
