Software
Operating Systems Solaris SPARC and X86 Operating System
  • Solaris 10 11/06
  • Solaris 10 6/06 with Patch 118833-36 for SPARC and Patch 118855-36 for x64
Red Hat Linux
  • RHEL 4 U3, RHEL 4 U4, RHEL 4.5, RHEL 5.0
Suse Linux
  • SLES 10, SLES10SP1

Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition (Note: Upcoming Windows 2008 uses more advanced interrupt mechanism MSI/MSI-x that is also used in Solaris and Linux and supported in the current Sun Multithreaded 10GbE Card (X1027A-z) and expected to provide good performance for Windows 2008 and Vista. However Windows 2003 uses old interrupt technology INTX and the performance of the current 10GbE card would be low. The next revision (expected in Q1 CY09) of the Sun Multithreaded Technology/ASIC will add support of INTX and is expected to provide good performance on Windows 2003)

Sun Dual 10GbE XFP PCIe ExpressModule X1028A-z

10 GbE Short Reach Transceiver X5558A

10 GbE Long Reach Transceiver X5560A-z
Distances Supported by the Long Reach and Short Reach Transceivers
Short Reach (SR) Transceiver Short reach transceiver typically supports up to:
  • 33 m with OM1 MMF (Multi Mode Fiber using 850nm) cable
  • 50 m with OM2 MMF cable
  • 300 m with OM3 MMF cable

* Actual distance supported by the Transceiver is dependent on the quality of the fiber used.

Long Reach (LR) Transceiver Long reach transceiver needs to use SMF (Single Mode Fiber using 1310nm) Cable and can support longer distances beyond 300 m and up to 10km

* Actual distance supported by the Transceiver is dependent on the quality of the fiber used.
Connecting Servers and Switches with Transceivers of different form factors (XFP, SFP, SFP+, Xenpak, X2)
XFP, SFP, SFP+ Fiber cable with LC connector plugs into these transceivers

Xenpak and X2 Fiber cable with SC connector plugs into these transceivers

* Server NICs and Switch Ports with different form factors of transceivers can be connected by choosing the correct connectors for the fiber cable. Fiber cable with LC and LC connectors can connect XFP transceiver with SFP/SFP+ Transceiver. Fiber cable with LC and SC connectors can connect a) XFP,SFP/SFP+ transceiver with b) Xenpak, X2 transceiver
